William G. Johnson was born on September 28, 1928, to Thomas Henry Johnson Sr. and Vada Spangler-Johnson. “Bill”, as he was known to all as a true gentleman and made long lasting friendships. He captured your heart with his smile, compassion, sense of humor and fascinating stories.
He is preceded in death by parents, Thomas Henry Johnson Sr. and Vada Spangler-Johnson; Ellen Spangler Barnett (Special Aunt); Thomas Johnson Jr (Brother).
He is survived by his partner of 28 years, Rick Palomo; John Barnett and Karon Brown (Special Cousins), Ramona Palomo; Rick’s nine siblings and their spouses, countless nieces and nephews and lifelong dear friends, Russell Williams, and Buddy Stone.
Bill graduated from South Park High School in Beaumont, Texas in 1945 and received an associate degree from Lamar Junior College in 1947. He furthered his education by earning a bachelor’s degree from Lamar State College of Technology in 1957, and a banking degree from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking – Southern Methodist University in 1970.
In November of 1950, Bill was called to the honorable duty of serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. During is service, he earned the trust and recognition of Major Fuller during his work transcribing court martial cases. After a transfer, Bill found himself being called to work under Colonel Lazar and General Hewett. The General authorized Bill to have Top Secret Clearance, and a new assignment under his command. Bill was very proud of his years in the Army and wore his military cap with pride that radiated.
In 1955, Bill began his banking career, and worked in this field for over 30 years. He retired and continued working over 5 more years as a tour host for the Beaumont Emerald Club. Throughout his long and illustrious career, he was a member of American Bank/Texas Commerce, held various investment positions including, Vice President, Senior Vice President, Trust Officer, and Secretary to the Board of Directors.
Bill’s journey was filled with a life of love, travels, family, friends, antiques, and adventures with Rick. When his genuine beautiful blue eyes met yours, he was sure to be a friend for life. He was beloved by all, and the world is a little dimmer without his illuminating energy and spirit. Bill will be greatly missed, but he will forever be etched in our hearts and alive in our memories.
A visitation for Bill will be held Friday, February 4, 2022 from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Funeral Home, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A funeral service will occur Friday, February 4, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023. A graveside service will occur Friday, February 4, 2022 from 1:00 PM to 1:30 PM at Forest Park Lawndale Cemetery, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023.
