After basic training, he was assigned to the Quartermaster Corps and stationed in London, England and later in Paris, France – quite a change for a farm boy from Texas! He met his future wife, Miriam Gwendoline Farr of London, and was married in the Church of England. Upon his discharge from the service they moved to Washington, DC where Walter worked at the Pentagon as a civilian contractor. Walter and Gwen relocated to Houston, Texas in the early 50’s to be closer to his family.
Walter used his experience in the service to become a purchasing manager for Hydrocarbon Construction Company which later became Jacobs Engineering. He worked there until his retirement in 1986.
Walter was an active member of Saint Albans Episcopal Church of Houston and was a founding member of Holy Comforter Episcopal Church of Spring.
