God does not give us more than we can bear. Our Beloved Vernon “Peter Rabbit” Nichols, Jr. was a caring, loving, and hardworking man who committed himself to God and his family. He always had a word of advice on life, love, cars, music and hardships. Everyone who knew him knew how humble and fun loving he was.
Vernon, Jr was born May 8, 1939, to Vernon Nichols and Bernice Brooks in Houston, Texas. He departed from us on September 30, 2020.
Affectionately known as Peter Rabbit or Rabbit his kindness never went unnoticed or unappreciated. He treated people as he wished to be treated and had a soft spot in his heart for all children. He would never let a child leave without some amount of money even if it was only $1.00 or a can of soda water. On any given day you could find him tinkering on some sort of car or truck or at the raceway in Baytown. He had the need for speed. He never met a stranger, everyone was a friend. He graduated from B.T Washington High School and went to serve in the United States Army during the Vietnam War Era. He retired from Southern Pacific Railroad after 32 years of service.
Vernon was preceded in death by his father, Vernon Nichols, mother Bernice Brooks, grandmother Corine “Nanny” Brooks, grandfather James “Papa Jim” Brooks and the love of his life Josephine Valien Nichols. He is lovingly survived by his children Darrell Punch (Cheryl), Timothy Punch, Rachel Nichols, and Treveon Bledsoe; grandchildren Morgan “Crystal” Jackson and Aston “Knucklehead” Calloway. He is also survived by brother Antonio Nichols, Sr. and sister Queen Sheba Nichols. Also a host of nieces, nephews, friends, and cousins especially Gladys Austin, Aaron Kirksey and Leslie Gordan.
