After graduating from Melville High School, Vera relocated to Houston, TX where she soon met her husband, Raymond White. Raymond and Vera married on August 1, 1965. To this 56-year union, two daughters were born: LaWanda Williams (Cedric) of New Caney, TX and CoWanda White of Humble, TX.
Vera knew Christ at a young age and was baptized at True Light Baptist Church in Bayou Current, LA and she continued to support True Light throughout her entire life. Vera was an active and supportive member of Calvary Way Baptist Church for the last 35 years. She served with enthusiasm on the Ministers and Deacons Wives Committee, Pastor’s Aide, and the decorating committee. She took great pleasure in ensuring her church was adorned with beautiful flowers and décor.
Vera achieved great success professionally and retired from the Water Works Department for the City of Houston as an Administrator after 25 years of dedicated service leaving a strong legacy of leadership and commitment. While retired, Vera enjoyed lunches with the “Do Nothing Club”, travel and spending time with family, friends and caring for others in need. She was an excellent cook who was famous for her Cajun cuisine which she happily hosted for hundreds at her dining room table. Her home was always open to visitors who were continually delighted with coffee and a meal. Vera was a member of Top Ladies of Distinction – Lake Houston Chapter and active within her Homestead Road community.
On April 12, 2022, Vera transitioned to glory in her home surrounded by her family. She was preceded in death by both of her parents Isiah and Ophelia Thomas, one sister, Catherine Guillory and four brothers, Estain Thomas, Isiah Thomas Jr, Ray Thomas, and Louis Thomas. Vera is survived by her husband, Raymond, her daughters, LaWanda (Cedric) and CoWanda, three grandsons Raymond T. White, Cedric E. Williams II and Bryce A. Williams, five sisters Gertrude Guillory, Gloria Frank, and Elizabeth Wheeler all of Opelousas, LA and her baby sister Delores Thomas of Houston, TX. Vera leaves to cherish her memory hundreds of nieces and nephews to whom she maintained a close and personal relationship. She enjoyed a loving relationship with her Goddaughter Ashley Davis and dear friend Pamela Kindle.
Vera was a loving and giving lady who thoroughly enjoyed hosting dinners and celebrations. She greeted everyone with her angelic voice always saying, “Hey Sweetheart”. Although we are heartbroken by her passing, we have peace and comfort in knowing that she is resting, healed, and made whole, in the bosom of Jesus Christ. She has left a legacy of charity and love and she will be forever missed.
