Thomas Michael “Mike” Andrews was born January 31, 1941 in San Antonio, Texas, the first son of Thomas Gilbert Andrews and Dorothy Doyle Andrews. He died after a very short illness surrounded by family – those he loved most.
After attending St. Anne Catholic School in Houston, he graduated from Spring Branch High School where he was a star pitcher for the baseball team, a member of the “Fine 59 Class” and also met the love of his life, Patricia “Patsy” Ann Fox. He then continued his education at the University of Texas in Austin to study engineering. He finished his studies with a BS in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Houston.
He was a lifelong employee of Stewart & Stevenson Services. He began his career at “S&S” working as a draftsman before he was out of High School and worked his way up to VP of Engineering and later VP of Business Practices. He was a member of ASME, NSPE, and TSPE (the latter 2 because he was a PE (professional engineer). He was also active in GHBER (Greater Houston Business Ethics Roundtable and DII (Defense Industry Initiative on Business Ethic and Conduct) both the local and the national groups.
After retirement from S&S he served as a Councilman for the City of Spring Valley and then he served as Mayor for another eight years.
From his time at S&S, he had a group of lifelong friends known as the MACH4 which included the McFarland, Andrews, Coker and Hammer families. He was an “Original” member of this group that has now grown to include four generations.
Being a former baseball player, he loved his Astros…. through thick and thin. He enjoyed a day of golf with one or both of his sons, boat outings on Lake Conroe with family and friends, or just sitting on the deck and enjoying the view from the lake house in Walden on Lake Conroe. Later in life he enjoyed traveling and started seeing the world with his wife and family, having many great adventures along the way.
He supported many charities, especially the Ronald McDonald House of Houston and City Artworks, assisting in the past with their fundraising events. He always lent a hand to those in need, enjoyed mentoring and being involved in community projects.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Patsy, his two sons, Scott Andrews (Suzanne) and Mark Andrews (Allison), two granddaughters, Emily Andrews (Travis) and Taylor Shekarabi (Bobby) and two brothers, Charles Frederick “Chuck” Andrews (Sharon) and Richard Edward Andrews (Elizabeth). He also leaves three cousins as well as nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to his favorite charities in his honor would be greatly appreciated. Those charities would be Houston Food Bank, Kids Meals Inc., Ronald McDonald House Houston or your preferred charity.
A celebration of Mike's life will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 19 at Waltrip Funeral Directors in Houston.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.waltripfuneraldirectors.com for the Andrews family.
