Born May 15, 1948, in Beaumont, Texas, Tom moved to Houston as a child, graduating from John H. Reagan High School in 1967 before serving in the US Army from 1968-1970. Tom was a loyal employee of Texas Pipe & Supply for over thirty years before his retirement in 2017. He had a passion for sports, and he could often be found in the stands cheering on his Oilers, Texans, Astros, and Rockets. A true friend and mentor, he always found a way to attend birthday parties, graduations, baseball and soccer games, and other events for everyone in his life.
Thomas is survived by his loving daughter Amy (Jeff) Myer and three grandchildren, Madison, Austin, and Jackson. He is also survived by his three devoted sisters: Bertha Alvarez; Dolores (Bill) Murphy (and family Mike, Gena, Gary & Marisa); and Rose (Patrick) Watson (and family Derrick, Amber, Gwen & Dale) and numerous other nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert V. and Rose Helen (Mendizabal) Alvarez, and his brother Robert Alvarez.
Visitation was Saturday, April 27 from 2:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in the chapel of Waltrip Funeral Directors in Houston, Texas, where a celebration of Gary's life began at 3:00 p.m. Friends and family were invited to share a story or memory, in honor of a life well-lived. Military Honors were provided by members of the United States Army Honor Guard. A private interment was held at Houston National Cemetery at a later date.
For those desiring, and in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to your local Humane Society in Mr. Alvarez’s name would be appreciated.
