He is survived by his wife of 21 years, Jennifer Hicks McDowell, age 47, children Scarlett Ann Louise McDowell, age 18, and Holden James McDowell, age 13. Steve is also survived by his parents James and Arlene McDowell, now in Florida but previously from Kingwood and Conroe, and half-sister Mary Elizabeth Deel of Florida.
Steve graduated from Kingwood High school in 1993, an excellent student and athlete, and particularly successful in his life-long sport of soccer. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1997 where he was also a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity.
Moving back to Houston, he began a career in the finance and energy industry working for Dynegy in 1999, the same year he met his wife, Jennifer. Marrying in 2001, Steve continued his career while also becoming a dad to Scarlett in 2004.
In 2008 he received his MBA from the Texas McCombs School of Business and his son, Holden, was born in 2009. He excelled at balancing family time with his work, becoming a VP at KGen Power and later at the Carlyle Group.
Steve spent some of his free time watching Longhorn football and playing golf, but he really loved coaching the kids’ soccer and baseball teams for many years. He was also a proud dad, standing ringside, at his daughter’s horse shows and later at FFA shows.
Gone too soon, he will be greatly missed by all.
A memorial celebration of life will be held Monday, Oct. 10 at 2:00 p.m. followed by a reception at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX 77079.
