She was born near Broxburn, Scotland on October 15, 1971, to Hugh and Janet Mathie and grew up in Lanark, Scotland.
Shona graduated with a B.A. in Marketing from the University of Strathclyde, in Glasgow in 1993 and earned a Postgraduate Diploma in Personnel Management from the Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen in 1994. She began working for Shell plc as a contractor directly after university, hiring on in October 1996. Over her impressive 27 years of service, Shona had assignments in Aberdeen, Dublin, and Houston, but her leadership and influence spanned across Shell’s operations globally.
You could often find Shona happily humming in her kitchen as she prepared a meal, or while working in her beautiful garden. Shona enjoyed hosting dinners, holiday get-togethers and garden parties. She was very inclusive and invited friends and neighbors to her home to join in on the fun. She loved all The Great British Bake Show series, including The Food Channel’s Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives and Beat Bobby Flay. The Food Channel was always playing in the background.
If Shona wasn’t entertaining or traveling, she was out for a neighborhood walk, bike riding, or going to concerts and theater events. After making Houston her home, she particularly became enamored with the great Texas tradition of attending the Houston Livestock and Rodeo event every year dressed in her cowboy boots and hats. Shona was an avid Agatha Christie fan and has read and seen all her novels, movies, and theatrical productions.
Shona was a wonderful friend and wife and loved by many. She was thoughtful and considerate and maintained important connections with friends and loved ones both near and far. It was Shona’s outgoing nature that led her to meet her husband, Joe Musallam, in 2018 through a close friend of his who moved in next door to Shona. Joe, a lifelong bachelor, stood no chance against Shona’s charm and they were married in 2021.
Although Shona never lost her loyalty to Scotland, she became an American citizen in August 2022. The UK and the US were lucky to have Shona, as were the many lives she touched along the way.
She cared deeply for her friends and family and was loved beyond words by every person she touched. Shona will be missed immensely. Her memory is a blessing.
Shona is survived by her parents Hugh and Janet Mathie, husband Joe Musallam, brother Stuart Mathie and his partner Roxane Peters.
