Shirley Jackson Wall of Richmond, Texas passed away on April 3, 2024, at the age of 94. She was born on January 1, 1930 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Shirley was the daughter of Robert and Violet Jackson. Her dad was a Captain in the Navy and he was stationed in El Paso, Texas during part of her childhood years. During World War II her family moved in with her grandparents in Ponchatoula, Texas where she spent her high school years.
Shirley moved back to New Orleans with her family. Here she met the love of her life, John Wall, on August 8, 1948. They married on December 27, 1951. They always celebrated the date they met versus their wedding date. Shirley attended and graduated from Newcomb University. She graduated with a Bachelor's degree in teaching.
She worked as an elementary teacher in the French Quarter until her first pregnancy. John, her husband, moved to Texas when he was drafted into the Air Force. She then worked as a housewife and a mother to two children. They lived in the Houston area for the rest of their lives with the exception of a few years in Mobile, Alabama. Shirley later taught preschool. She was an awesome teacher and later became a Director for a preschool. She later worked as an executive secretary in her husband’s company, Houston, Data Center.
Shirley loved to shop, cook elaborate meals, and entertain. She was a southern living girl. She loved creating a fancy meal just for her family for the holidays. She worked in her retirement years in a shop that sold beautiful folk art. She spent all her salary buying things from these artists. Shirley also loved to set an elaborate table for a luncheon, a tea, and her favorite,or a holiday dinner. She has an amazing collection of china.
Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Violet Jackson, and her beloved husband, John Wall.
She is survived by her sister, Evelyn Lashley, and her two children, Judy O’Neal and John Wall Jr. and his fiance Cynthia Cacayan, her grandchildren, Rob O’Neal and his wife Kelly, Kelly Garver and her husband Rex, Jared Wall and Tory Torres, and her husband Jose’ Torres, her great grandchildren, Colin O’Neal, Carter O’Neal, Kaitlyn Garver, Carmen Torres, and her namesake, Valerie Shirley Torres.
The family would like to thank their family members, friends and neighbors for the care and compassion they showed both of their parents in their final days. We are celebrating that our parents are finally back together again.
