Sharyn Leigh Tanton has been liberated from all sickness and went to be with our Lord and Savior on Thursday October 12th at 6:36 pm. She was born on August 14th, 1958 in Lake Charles, LA and moved to Houston, TX with her family at the age of 1. Sharyn attended Spring Woods High School where she met her lifelong friend Karen Longshore Reese and soulmate Danial Tanton. She later married her high school sweetheart Danial on February 11th of 1984. She was an entrepreneur and owner of The Graphic Shop, a graphic design and commercial typographic service, for 18 years. The business grew successfully and was sold in 2001. Sharyn and her family then took a month long road trip to travel the western half of the US making many memories along the way.
On the evening of March 4, 2001, she experienced a sudden cardiac arrest attending an event at church. She was without a pulse for 22 minutes before EMS was able to revive her. In November of 2006, Sharyn then suffered a second cardiac arrest while at home. She was without a pulse for 75 minutes.
While her physical body never fully recovered, her spiritual one flourished. In the light of her medical history, Sharyn felt blessed to proclaim the miracles that God had performed to allow her to continue life on earth with her husband and boys. Sharyn was an evangelist for Jesus Christ, with a hunger to seek Him and know Him more. In her words “I have been on your time God, not mine, I praise you for the laughter, the tears, the blessings and fears, the fellowship, the love, the grace, the provision, the hope, the dreams and the promise you give us by accepting Jesus as our Savior.”
Sharyn joins her father and mother, Bill & Fran Tennyson in Heaven. She is survived by her Husband Danial, her son Dustin, her son Tyler and his wife Meagan, and three grandchildren, Malachi, Evangeline, and Eli; her sister Dona Harriman and her husband Mark, and her brother Stephen Tennyson. She is additionally survived by many brothers and sisters in Christ who continue to share and proclaim her testimony.
A Celebration of Life & Reception will be held at 10am on Saturday, October 21st at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Fwy, Houston, TX 77079.

Pastor Jonny Marks – Bayou City Fellowship Church
Good morning on behalf of Dan, the boys and family I just want to welcome you. As we celebrate, this sounds kind of weird to say, as we celebrate Sharyn's life and look forward to a hopeful future, and as we grieve the loss of a wife, a mom, a sister and a friend, we're also going to find comfort, as we understand Sharyn's faith, which happened to be the strongest foundation for her. It offers certainty for us at this time and allows us to celebrate, even as we mourn today.
Let's pray together.
Heavenly Father we would just ask that you be present here, God that you would Minister to us and that your Peace would rest on us and that you would reveal yourself. We know that Sharyn put her faith in a Living God, a Real God, that loves and moves and intervenes and is present. God we would ask that you would simply take hold of those here today who are working through the loss of Sharyn. We ask God that you would offer hope and even joy in this time, we pray in Jesus name. Amen
I would like to read from Psalm 27 and then we're going to hear a song and while the song plays, I just want to encourage you to allow the things that you hear, the scripture you hear, the stories you hear, during these songs that you would allow the music to speak to you, but also to process those things and not waste the moment knowing that it's all intentional and even for you today.
Scripture Reading | Psalm 27:1-5;
The Lord is my light and my salvation— whom shall I fear?
The Lord is the stronghold of my life— of whom shall I be afraid?
When evil men advance against me to devour my flesh,
when my enemies and my foes attack me, they will stumble and fall.
Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me, even then will I be confident.
One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek:
that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life,
to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to seek him in his temple.
For in the day of trouble he will keep me safe in his dwelling;
he will hide me in the shelter of his tabernacle and set me high upon a rock.
I am still confident of this:
I will see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living.
Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.
As we hear this song, would you just reflect on that scripture and allow God to minister to you.
Song – “I Can Only Imagine” – by Mercy Me
I can only imagine what it will be like
When I walk by Your side
I can only imagine, what my eyes will see
When Your face is before me
I can only imagine
Surrounded by Your glory
What will my heart feel
Will I dance for you, Jesus
Or in awe of You be still
Will I stand in Your presence
Or to my knees will I fall
Will I sing hallelujah
Will I be able to speak at all
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
I can only imagine, when that day comes
And I find myself standing in the Son
I can only imagine, when all I will do
Is forever, forever worship You
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
I can only imagine
When all I will do
Is forever, forever worship you
I can only imagine

We're going to hear from a few folks here, first one is from one of Sharyn's best friends Margarett. I’ll invite her up at this time and then we will hear from Dan and one of the boys. Thank you Margarett so much for being willing to share with us this morning.
Margarett Vozar – Sharyn’s Friend
Wow - Good morning my name is Margarett Vozar. I'm honored to be asked by Dan to speak today to talk about my best friend, one of my best friends. As I was deciding what to say, I thought describing Sharyn through my eyes would be best by using the letters of her name to describe Sharyn as I see her.
“S” is for Smart, she would say, I lost all my brain power on my cardiac arrests, and I would say no, no you didn't, she was very smart, Spicy, she had a side eye like no other, Strong, always, Spiritual, a Survivor, Special, I called her special needs, she was Sarcastic as hell and I loved that about her, Stylish, she always looks fabulous and beautiful.
“H” is for Hilarious, she had a wicked wit, Healing, she healed with prayers and touch, she gave comfort to many, Hopeful, always hopeful and when she wasn't hopeful she prayed, Hugger, and sometimes to my chagrin it was ad nauseam but she was a hugger.
“A” is for Appreciative, she never took the love and care and the gifts that people gave her either physical or spiritual for granted, Affectionate, she loved her family deeply, all her family deeply and her friends and her God. She never met a stranger and she was Articulate, she would write prayers for people she didn't even know, friends of mine and they would really touch them. She was a prayer warrior, that's what we called her in our Reunion Group. She was Artsy, she loved to create flower arrangements, Sustainable Arrangements I called them. Abundance, generous with time for prayer, create exacting prayers and provide support for many, even though she was dealing with a lot.
“R” is for Righteous, always turning to God without fail, she was genuine, no masks, no games, except for Farkle. Responsible, she always did the next right thing. If you remember Sharyn was very clear about the Y in her name, if you got that wrong, she would correct you gently, but with clarity. I couldn’t think of words with a Y so, I'm being a rebel and substituting an O. You might want to duck, there could be fire coming down, I am certain she's shaking her finger at me right now, Sharyn I'm asking for forgiveness, not permission.
“O” is for obedient to God always, Observant, nothing got out of her vision, she noticed everything. She was Obstinate, oh my gosh when she got it in her head that was it. She was Obsessive, she loved that about herself, but she loved perfection, she wanted things to be right.
“N” is for Natural beauty inside and out even though she struggled with that, she was always beautifully nurturing to her children, to animals, the people in need. My gosh, I would call her needy and she would get so mad at me, but she know what she wanted.
“T” is for Tanton, Thrifty, she always found a bargain, in the darkest places she would find a bargain, Thankful, always showing gratitude and finally, Teacher about Christ to so, so many.
Godspeed, my remarkable friend to me!
Margarett
Dustin Tanton – Sharyn’s youngest son
My name is Dustin, Sharyn's son and other caretaker. I think a lot of us claim that job status in this room, a lot of us looked after her throughout her time here. When I was young I would take care of her at home when she wasn't able to get out of the house. That was just the way it was, she needed someone at the house to take care of her or help her and I was the one to do that. That meant not getting out of the house, me being able to stay home and watch TV, that was a win win. I was a young kid so I enjoyed it. To my brother and myself she was known as Sargent Mommy, she was always keeping us in line, making sure we have the proper buttons done or undone. I'm glad she was there to tell me how it works because I lost that manual. She as well always had the can do attitude with any obstacle I faced and an action plan to go with it. Always nailing down that it can indeed be done. Sometimes tasks simply look larger than they actually are and when that was the case she would tell me “just do it” and that was sometimes just what I needed to hear.
She was also a warrior for Christ, every single opportunity, giving God the glory He deserves, pointing His direction for anyone and everyone, not just for me but everyone around her. I still see the impact she has on the community around us more and more everyday, still it's kind of crazy. The past few years I found interest in gardening, flowers and vegetables, as y'all probably know she did a lot of gardening of flowers and we were able to connect on that, sending pictures, asking questions of each other, different ideas on how to do whatever it was for whatever plant and even teach each other a thing or two. Believe it or not, maybe, probably one way more than the other, me being pretty new, I had a lot to take in.
The night before she passed was like a party, kind of like one of those college parties where everyone's having a great time, we're all playing games, no one's worried about homework due on Monday morning even though it's online submission and they have to do it by 3:00 a.m.. She wasn't worried about anything, she was completely unhindered by her sickness or what she's been dealing with. That was an awesome thing to see, it was an amazing night to be remembered forever.
I love you Mom!
Dustin
Dan – Husband
First of all I want to thank everybody for taking time out of your busy day to help us celebrate Sharyn today. Each and everyone of you are very dear to Sharyn’s heart and mine. I am sure she is overjoyed with seeing all of you here physically and also those watching online or are in prayer for her and couldn’t make it today. Sharyn was a planner which makes my life so much easier when it comes to something like this, she wanted a joyous gathering with stories of the positive things in her life, songs and shared memories to honor her. I am going to share with yall something that gives me great comfort, listen to these quotes from the bible.

So much comfort in these verses!
Sharyn and I met in high school, our freshman year in Homeroom which I don't believe they do that anymore, her last name was Tennyson, mine is Tanton so they put us in alpha order and I sat right behind her. We quickly became friends because I would play with her beautiful blonde hair as an icebreaker to get to know her. I did this until our senior year, at which time I finally got the guts to ask her to go out with me and obviously she said yes. That was 1977 and here we are in 2023. Alot has happened in that time, we got married in 1984, after dating 7.5 years, boy have I heard about that, sorry Honey. We have two beautiful boy’s Tyler in 1989 and Dustin 1993.
Sharyn had her own business for 18 years when we first got married, she sold it in early 2001. Sharyn always seeked God, but was not able to go full throttle with Him because I was always the anchor pulling her back, slowing her down but she was persistent and finally I saw the light many years later only because of her determination to bring me under Gods wing. Yes Sharyn had a rough road the past 22 years with heart issues but only because of God did she survive those 22 years. There are so many stories of how God aligned individuals into her life that allowed Sharyn to survive. God put the right people at the right time or right situations with her in each stage of her life when she needed it most. Every one of those individuals are angels of Sharyn’s, unbeknownst to them God was calling them to do His work.
Sharyn was always reaching out to anyone around her and interacting with them on her Christian walk, many times when we had a nurse change, I would go, well this nurse isn’t going to be very pleasant. Each time the nurse comes in Sharyn would minister to them, before you know it they would be exchanging stories, their favorite verses and prayers for each other, truly a beautiful thing for each of them as well as for Sharyn. It wasn’t only the nurses but the Doctors as well Sharyn would minister to, this gave Sharyn so much strength to continue on. I thank God for all of this.
Sharyn helped me start my Christian walk, and provided a show and tell for both boys and myself on their Christian walk. Since her passing numerous people have conveyed how Sharyn influenced them and several stated she was a shining example how a Christian walk should look like. Sharyn lived her life to please God, she knew her life was in his hands, he used her as an example to influence those around her. I stand here in awe with what God did for her.
Sharyn had a horn to alert us if she needed help while we were in a different room. I am missing hearing that horn from the other room when she needed me, helping her shower, preparing her meals and playing Farkle or Kings Corners which were a favorite pastime of ours. I am missing Her hugs, kisses and touch of her hand and praying together nightly. Now I get comfort from sleeping on her side of the bed, sitting in her spot of the couch and listening to her Christian Music Playlist she created.
I was truly blessed to be a part of Sharyn’s passing, Prayer in her ear, thank you Lavonne, me holding the phone to her ear and staring eye to eye, face to face as she crossed over into The Glory Land. I thank God for this beautiful experience to watch my wife assend to His Glorious House.
I am not sad that she has gone to be with our God Almighty. God promises me Sharyn is healthy now, no pain but jumping with joy. Sharyn is visiting with friends and loved ones that have previously past. I know she's sitting in the grandstands of heaven watching us down here play Life and most likely getting many giggles out of some of the stupid things we do.
Honey I love you, I miss you and I look forward to our reunion once I cross over. I do ask that you please continue to nurture me and our boy’s Christian walk from above.
I Love you Honey and always will!

Song – “It is Well” by Kristen DiMarco
Grander earth has quaked before
Moved by the sound of His voice
And seas that are shaken and stirred
Can be calmed and broken for my regard
And through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
And through it all, through it all
It is well
And through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
And it is well, with me
Far be it from me to not believe
Even when my eyes can't see
And this mountain that's in front of me
Will be thrown into the midst of the sea
And through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
And through it all, through it all
It is well
And through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
And it is well, it is well
So let go my soul and trust in Him
The waves and wind still know His name
So let go my soul and trust in Him
The waves and wind still know His name
So let go my soul and trust in Him
The waves and wind still know His name
The waves and wind still know His name
And it is well
With my soul
It is well
With my soul
It is well
With my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
Oh, it is well
With my soul
Oh, it is well
With my soul
It is well
With my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
It is well, it is well with my soul
And through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
And through it all, through it all
It is well, Lord
And through it all, through it all
My eyes are on You
And it is well with me
Pastor Jonny Marks
It is well!
I had the opportunity to visit with Sharyn twice in the hospital, first time she wasn’t doing that well and when I was there she looked at me when I walked in, she said, oh you're here, which, I thought well I am a Pastor, of course I'm here and I said well what kind of Pastor would I be if I wasn't here to visit you when you're in the hospital. Sharyn replied, I know that, I just wanted to make sure you knew that, and I thought okay we’ve got a live one here. You know when you look at somebody's life you have an idea that based on their circumstances, they are either blessed, or not blessed, cared for, not cared for, loved by God, or not. As you've heard from family and friends and in many of your experiences Sharyn's strength didn't come from her circumstances. Sharyn’s strength came from her relationship with God. Jeremiah 17 – says this,
Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the LORD.
All capitals when you see Lord in the Bible means, Yahweh, the God of the universe. He's the creator of all things, He is not some small g god that is incapable, but the one who is above all and the in all and through all things that are made. He is like a tree planted by water that sends out its roots by the stream and does not fear when he comes. For its leaves remain green and is not anxious. This picture describes a person who is so connected to God that no matter what comes, if drought comes or difficulties or seasons of dryness, because they are so rooted near the stream, they are green and they continue to bear fruit and I thought what a wonderful picture of Sharyn. This woman, whose faith is so strong and so rooted in the God who made her, that not only did she deal with her life circumstances or endure her life circumstances, she thrived and then caused others to thrive as well. Many of you are here because of Sharyn being planted by the stream of God. Staying watered in his love and his grace, it doesn't mean that she didn't have difficulty and that she didn't struggle, we are human after all, but because she was connected to God her faith sustained her.
I was talking to Dan this weekend and asked him what's the word that would just sum Sharyn up and he said Faith, and not just Faith but her faithfulness to others. It made me think of Philippians 3, maybe you know the scripture, the apostle Paul is writing a letter to the church in Philippi and he happens to be in prison when he wrote it and he describes the situation that he is in, and his attitude about his life that I think you would find reflective of Sharyn, it says –
But whatever was to my gain, whatever I had, I cannot lose for the sake of Christ, indeed I count everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus, my Lord, for his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish in order that I may gain Christ, and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law but that which comes through faith in Christ the righteousness of God that depends on faith. That I may know him, in the power of his resurrection and may share in his suffering, becoming like him, in his death that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection of the Dead.
Sharyn knew that knowing Jesus was the main goal, that knowing Christ, that being connected to him and even sharing and suffering connected her even more to the God that made her and all the things she could gain on the earth paled in comparison, we're less than. In fact Paul wrote all of this is rubbish, it’s just junk compared to knowing Jesus. The joy Sharyn spoken about the thing that gave her the strength and ability to continue on, not just dealing with it, but giving herself over to others was her knowing Jesus and I think when we grieve, I don't know about you, when we look at the end of a person’s life we are confronted with the end of ours. We are confronted with hearing these amazing things about this woman who loves Jesus and loved others and through her faithfulness, your faithfulness to others and I don't know about you, but life can be a little fuzzy sometimes, and you go I don’t know about this, that is normal and understandable. We ask a lot of questions, we have moments that become difficult to understand and it can be hard to take hold of the reality of life, and what's beyond and when we take an account of our lives, the broken parts can seem to be glaring can't they, the lack, the difficulty, those circumstances that we think define us. Then there's these moments where we are grasping to make sure we want hope, right, we want to know. The reason Dan comes up, with a smile and he has a spring in his step and engaging all of us, I am watching Dan, you the man, this is great because Dan has hope, he has certainty and it's not because he's been there, it's not because you know he has taken a picture at the gate, its because he has faith like Sharyn did and he knows. And whether we know it or not we're all putting our hope in something today, it may be Jesus and it may not and I want to do Sharyn a solid and tell you what her faith was in, because I think she wants you to know and speaking with his disciples in John Chapter 14 - Jesus said something and it's pretty direct and it's pretty clear, because he was getting ready to give his life, not for just them, but the whole world and it says this –
Jesus spoke these words, he says, do not let your hearts be troubled, trust in God and trust also in me and my fathers house, there’s many rooms, if it were not so I would have told you, I am going there to prepare a place for you and if I go I will come back and take you to be with me so that you also may be where I am, you know the way to the place where I am going.
And Thomas, who I can relate to, maybe you can relate to Thomas the great doubter, he heard the words directly and he says okay but,
Lord we don't know where you're going, so how can we know the way, and Jesus answered, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me he said, if you really knew me you would know my father as well and from now on you know him and have seen him. Jesus says I am the way, there's a clear way, it's a good way, the best way, the only way, and it's through me Jesus.
The world around us is going to continue to let us down, fall apart, it’s the way of the world, it‘s the way of the flesh and the body, what we have is not getting better. We live with unmet expectations and fight to maintain purpose and direction but there is a way to the finish line. There is a way to have certainty, not just at this moment, but in every moment, whether good or bad, weather in the hospital or at home, whether at work or on the ball field, driving down the highway, sitting alone in your room wondering what's next. Do not let your hearts be troubled, Jesus said, and I'm just going to give it to you straight, the Bible tells us at the beginning he made us in his image and he desired to be with us, he created us to be with him in intimacy. The Bible says that everyone, me, you, the best person, the worst person, have all fallen short, we've all chosen to do our own thing. We just have to acknowledge it, it's one of those things and because of those choices, the Bible says that our sin causes the breakdown and the final breakdown, death in the Bible says, wages of sin is death. But there's a way to eternal life, it's not by our goodness or trying to fix it ourselves because it's impossible to do that. The Bible says and we know that man didn't write it because we wouldn't have made it about Jesus we would have made it about ourselves. I want to fix myself, but the Bible is clear, the good news is clear, as Jesus says, there was one way to fix the problem of our sin and brokenness and that was Jesus Christ!
The bible says God so loved the world, he gave His one and only Son, that whoever would believe, that word whoever means, whoever, it doesn't matter how ugly your sin is, doesn't matter how dirty your sin is, how far away you've gotten, how angry you've been with God, it doesn't matter. It says, whoever believes in Him will have eternal life. You can have certainty and a hope for the future. Bible says if you confess your sin that He is faithful and will forgive you of your unrighteousness, if you confess from your mouth that Jesus is Lord and you believe in your heart that Jesus will raise you from the dead then you will in fact be saved from having to take on the punishment of your own sin and I know in this day and age talking this directly might seem a little pointed, but it's what it says and it's what Sharyn had her faith in and she would want you to have your faith in. I want you to have your faith and ultimately that God wants you to put your faith in Jesus so that you can be with him forever because he desires that. God does not hate you, he loves you and he's waiting for you, it's what Sharyn told the world because she knew that's where hope was. At the end of the book Revelation 21 it says this –
Those who put their hope in God and trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior the Bible says now the dwelling of God is with man and he will live with them. They will be his people and God himself will be with them and be their God, he will wipe away every tear from their eyes, there will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain for the old order of things have passed away. Behold, I am making everything new.
And finally first Corinthians Chapter 15 –
Death has been swallowed up in victory in this world, death is the final thing, but to God it is not the final thing, it has actually been swallowed up in victory. It says -where oh death is your victory, where oh death is your sting, the sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law, but thanks be to God he gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
He gives us the victory through the shed blood of Jesus, through the resurrection of Jesus. Therefore my dear brothers, my dear sisters, stand firm, let nothing move you, always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain. As we remember Sharyn and we remember the great stories and we remember the great struggles that she were both apart of and endured, make sure that you remember more the faith that she had. That made her a strong tree planted by streams of living water. Remember the faith that she had that gave her joy and suffering. Remember the faith that she had that kind of lashed out to you to bring you along and to teach you the way to everlasting life, yes mourn, grieve, and allow it to come. It’s not going to play fair, grief and mourning don’t play fair, it'll hit you in the weirdest times and the worst times. The most inconvenient times and you have to let it come, but don't do it by yourself and outside of faith in Jesus. Let the love of God minister to your soul today and tomorrow and if you're not sure about what this moment will be for you, square up with the Lord, he's waiting. He's waiting and he's wanting you to put your faith in Jesus as well.
Prayer by Pastor Jonny Marks
Heavenly Father we thank you for the life of Sharyn, the faith that she showed, we thank you God for your wonderful goodness to us that we can have hope in this life even though it is falling away, passing away and you are able, capable and willing to give us a future and eternity with you. Thank you for the sacrifice of your son Jesus. Thanks for the life that we have in him. God as we hear this song that it would minister to our spirits before we continue to celebrate the life of your servant Sharyn, we pray these things in Jesus name, Amen.
Please listen to this song and we'll close out with a prayer in a moment.
Song – “I Surrender” by Hillsong Worship
Here I am
Down on my knees again
Surrendering all
Surrendering all
And find me here
Lord as You draw me near
Desperate for You
Desperate for You
I surrender
Drench my soul
As mercy and grace unfold
I hunger and thirst
I hunger and thirst
With arms stretched wide
I know You hear my cry
Speak to me now
Speak to me now
I surrender
I surrender
I wanna know You more
I wanna know You more
I surrender
I surrender
I wanna know You more
I wanna know You more
Like a rushing wind
Jesus breathe within
Lord have Your way
Lord have Your way in me
Like a mighty storm
Stir within my soul
Lord have Your way
Lord have Your way in me
Like a rushing wind
Jesus breathe within
Lord have Your way
Lord have Your way in me
Like a mighty storm
Stir within my soul
Lord have Your way
Lord have Your way in me
Like a rushing wind
Jesus breathe within
Lord have Your way
Lord have Your way in me
Like a mighty storm
Stir within my soul
Lord have Your way
Lord have Your way in me
Lord have Your way
Lord have Your way in me
I surrender
I surrender
I wanna know You more
I wanna know You more
