San Huy Nguyen, 67, of Houston, TX, passed away on November 1st, 2021, with his family lovingly by his side. San was born on December 25th, 1953 in Hanoi, Vietnam. He grew up and went to school in Vietnam and joined the Vietnamese Air Force in 1972. In April of 1975, when Saigon was overturned, he was forced to leave the Air Force and turned to industrial work. At the end of 1979, San’s oldest brother, Cuong Nguyen, sponsored him so that he could begin a new, better life in America. He lived in Dallas for over a year and then moved to Houston to join his other sister, Jackie/Tuyet Nguyen, and was able to find better work as a machinist. Because he still had family (Ngoc, Chau Long, and Cuong Nguyen) in Dallas, he would still come to visit there often. San’s brother-in-law, Tran Ky, introduced him there to one of his coworkers, Huyen Doan, in 1984. Huyen and San immediately started to date and fell in love quickly. Huyen joined him in Houston. There they became engaged and were married by 1985. Their first daughter, Diana Nguyen, was born on October 22nd, 1986. They had their second daughter, Julie Nguyen, on June 27th, 1994. Both of them went on to attend and graduate from the University of Texas at Austin. Diana attended the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine and is now a pediatrician Texas Children’s Pediatrics. Julie is a freelance designer and Senior Administrative Associate at the University of Texas at Austin. Diana gave birth to their granddaughter, Riley Grace Burchett, on October 3rd, 2019.
As a family they have traveled to many different places around the world and have fond vacation memories including, but not limited to: DisneyLand and DisneyWorld (both twice), New York City, San Diego, Las Vegas, Chicago, Canada, Vietnam, and other various road trips and cruises, etc. San had a love for experiencing new cultures and cities, especially with his family. He was an extremely hard worker, dedicated, and was determined to provide for his family so that he could give them the life they deserved. His family meant more to him than anything else in the world and he was unendingly proud of his daughters. He made sure that each one had every opportunity available to them and he was very proud of that and their accomplishments as well. Though he had several health conditions and ailments throughout the years; he battled each one with the most amazing show of unyielding strength.
Everyone who knew San knew that he was an extremely hardworking, determined, and loving person- he loved his family very much and was a “family man” in every sense of the term. He is survived by his wife, Huyen of Houston, TX; daughter Diana of Spring, TX; daughter Julie of Austin, TX; and granddaughter Riley. San also leaves behind four sisters and his nieces and nephews. He will forever be in their hearts and missed very much.
