Samuel L Evans

Sam lived his entire childhood in the same home in Batesville as the youngest of three brothers. Upon graduating high school he joined the United States Army and served until he was honorably discharged in 1948. Taking advantage of the GI Bill, Sam attended Hendrix College in Conway, AR where he studied mathematics and physics and was a member of the varsity tennis team. It was on the tennis courts where he met the love of his life, Phyllis Horn Evans. Sam and Phyllis were the first couple to be married in the newly built chapel on the Hendrix campus on December 30, 1951. Upon graduation, they promptly set out for California where Sam began his long and successful career in the geophysical industry. His career began with Geophysical Services Inc. (GSI) where life for Sam and Phyll meant travelling from town to town with the rest of the seismic crew. They were particularly proud of their Airstream Silver Bullet mobile home that made life much easier on the road. Their first child, Sami was born while they were living in Raymondville, TX. After dozens of moves ranging from Michigan to as far as Tampico, Mexico, Sam and Phyllis settled in Midland, TX where the next chapter of his career began. Their son, Philip was born while living in Midland. GSI moved Sam to Houston, TX in 1967 where he began to take on international responsibilities that encompassed work on six continents for several geophysical contractors. It was during these years that Sam enjoyed being active in youth sports coaching softball, baseball and football. Sam was a lifelong hunter and continued to play tennis with friends at the Houston Racquet Club. Sam lived his last few years at Belmont Village Hunters Creek where he loved feeding the birds, reading the news and serving on the Resident’s Council. It was also at the Belmont where he met Ermine Chapman. They spent many hours together enjoying each other’s company and our family has been fortunate to know Ermine and appreciate the friendship that she and our father enjoyed.

Sam was a member of Emanuel Episcopal Church, The Society of Exploration Geophysicists, The Geophysical Society of Houston, the Houston Geological Society, The Petroleum Club of Houston and the Houston Racquet Club. Being an avid hunter, Sam loved to hunt deer in the Texas Hill Country, birds in South

Texas and ducks on the prairies outside of Houston. It was a passion he shared with Phyllis and many of their great friends for years.

Sam is survived by his daughter Sami Mossbarger (Ron), son Philip Evans (Beth Wright Evans) and his four grandchildren, Daniel Mossbarger Vogl, Jenna Mossbarger, Emily Evans and Matthew Evans. He is predeceased by his wife of 63 years, Phyllis, his parents and his brothers, Tommy and Ralph Evans.

The family would like to thank all of those at the Belmont for the wonderful love and care given to Sam. He knew and appreciated all of the staff and PALS in their own unique way. He was offered dignity and independence and was treated with compassion and respect.

A family service of interment will be held at Memorial Oaks Cemetery at a later date. There will be a reception to celebrate Sam’s life on Thursday, November 16, 2017 from 5:00-7:00 at the Houston Country Club, One Potomac Dr. Houston, TX.
