Sally Sponsel Kerr

Sally Sponsel Kerr, passed away peacefully on Thursday, the 5th of September 2024, after a long fight with cancer. Sally was born in Houston to Thane Tyler Sponsel and Mary Jane Price Sponsel on the 1st of July 1955. Sally was a fifth generation Houstonian and spent her entire life in Houston.

Sally graduated from Lamar High School and received a Nursing Degree from the University of Texas. She worked as an RN for a short period and was a devoted mother, daughter and wife for so many years thereafter. She was on the Board of The Children’s Fund, a member of the Junior League of Houston and a member of River Oaks Country Club.

Sally loved to travel with her family and always made friends along the way. Even though she could not speak a foreign language, she would try to explain something to someone that did not speak English by using her hands which was entertaining to watch. She loved to cook and there was nothing she wouldn’t try. Sally was an avid Houston Astros fan and spent countless hours watching her team play. Above all, she loved her family and friends. She is known as the second mother to many of her daughter’s friends.

Sally is survived by her husband of 45 years, David Kerr; her daughter, Mary Jane Stevens and her husband Brett Stevens; her grandson, Ryland Stevens; her brother, Ty Sponsel, Jr. and his wife Karen Sponsel; her sister-in-law Sandra Jarrett and her husband Tommy; and her sister-in-law Gail Maynard and her husband Eddie. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, Ty Sponsel III, Katie Sponsel, Sarah Sanders, Tyler Moore, Cooke Moore, Alan Jarrett, Laurie Jarrett, Scott Jarrett, Jennifer Cowan, Paul Maynard and John Maynard. Sally also loved spending time with her grand-niece, Brooke Sponsel; and grand-nephews, Reed Sponsel and Tyler Sponsel IV. Finally, Sally is survived by her close friend and caregiver for over 30 years, Rosie Rojas.

Friends are cordially invited to gather with the family and share remembrances of Sally from five o’clock in the afternoon until seven o’clock in the evening on Monday, the 16th of September, in the grand foyer of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

A memorial service is to be conducted at half past ten o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 18th of September at Trinity Episcopal Church, 1015 Holman Street in Houston.

Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception at a venue to be announced during the service.

Prior to the service, the family will have gathered for a private inurnment at Glenwood Cemetery in Houston.
