Ruben Murillo Sr. was born on October 9, 1953. He was born, raised and lived his entire life in Houston, Texas. He is predeceased by his mother, Teresa Carrizales and his father, Julio G. Rios. He is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 27 years, Rosa Murillo. He had two wonderful children; his beautiful daughter Delicia Garcia, who preceded him in death and his devoted son Ruben Murillo Jr. and wife Dafney, along with his stepchildren, Nelly Carlos and Jaime Carlos. He loved being a grandpa to Veronica Garcia, Alex Murillo, Gaby Murillo, Jiovanni Carlos, Devany Cabrera, Drew Cabrera and Lexi Yanez.
Ruben cherished his seven siblings: Martin Frank Carrizales, (who also preceded him in death) and wife Linda; Angelo Murillo and wife Maria; Gloria Arredondo; Belinda Rios and husband Don; Julie Mendoza; Rebecca Uballez; Yolanda Rios, and husband Monte. There are many nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces that enjoyed his humor, crazy anticks and wild jokes who will deeply miss him.
He was a movie enthusiast of classic gangster and mafia genres with the Godfather Saga being his favorite trilogy. There wasn’t a line he couldn’t quote or voice he couldn’t recreate. He was an avid home team fan, Astros, Texans, Rockets, any home team. The game being on was a good time to have a great time with family – not that he needed help having a good time. He loved to fish and spend an early morning casting out at the Texas City Dike or Pier 61, watching the sun rise and fighting the tide.
With his grand sense of humor, love, knowledge of music and larger-than-life personality, he was the life of the party! Ruben’s love for music naturally progressed into his side-gig of being a DJ as the Latin Social Club. Starting out with vinyl albums, huge speakers and a turntable, he eventually upgraded to streamlined speakers and a laptop which evolved into what everyone knew as CD Express. One of his greatest joys was watching the dance floor fill up from the sound of his mixes.
The only thing that came second to his music was his love of creating something from nothing. His innovative mind and strong hands could create or fix anything. From a bike made of scrap parts to a wooden box that transformed into a DJ stand, he could build anything. A feat he was proud of was his garage – equipped with every tool necessary for any project imaginable, he loved to transform his idea into a reality.
He put his strong and talented hands to work all his life. He had a 32-year career with the Union Pacific Railroad where he made lifelong friends and lasting memories working on locomotives where he lived his passion in fixing things. He also was a long-time employee of Maxwell House, ironic because he loved his coffee. No matter where he was or where he went, he never met a stranger, always met a friend and always left a lasting impression on those around him.
Ruben, you will be missed, never forgotten and will always be loved! As he would say… aye te wacho!!
