Roy is a native Houstonian growing up in Fifth Ward. He attended school in Houston Independent School District (Bruce Elementary, E.O. Smith Jr. High School and Kashmere Garden Senior High). He was an honor student at all levels of education. He was extended many opportunities during his school days to demonstrate his leadership abilities. In school, he was a member of the student council, safety patrol and swim team. He also played football and baseball.
He continued his education in Management where he received an Associate degree, and completed Charles Harrison Mason Bible College. After his completion of this degree; in 1993, he was ordained as an Elder in the Church of God in Christ – Texas Southeast First Jurisdiction.
Elder Roy Jefferson was industrious, adventurous and outgoing as a little boy. Elder Jefferson has served in the Houston community; including the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub and Boy Scout. He also had many occupations and positions helping and assisting wherever he could. He held many positions at various companies such as Bellows Construction Company, Houston Ship Channel and 36 years with Houston Independent School District where he retired in 2014.
Elder Jefferson has served under six Pastor’s including Supt. David Anderson (Cage Church of God in Christ), Supt. R. L. Norton, Supt. J. B. Allen, Supt. Luther Swindell Sr., Bishop Rufus Kyles Jr. and his present Pastor; Supt. Dr. Charles Hill all of Norton Temple Church of God in Christ. Roy would help the church and Pastors in every God given opportunity; helping install revival tents in the Houston Fifth Ward area where many souls were saved. He also assisted in reconstructing and building churches on “Cage Street” while going over to help Elder Norton build his second Arbor with his Supt. David Anderson. He continued his work in church construction beautifying the edifice at Norton Temple.
Elder Jefferson was a preaching machine, loved to sing and tried his hand at playing the guitar. He had many God given attributes, his willingness to serve stood out most, which included singing in the choir, serving as; Deacon, Ordained Elder, Treasurer, Finance Chairman, Janitor, Electrician and as Assistant Pastor. He was also Trustee Board member, Sunday School Teacher, Bible Band member and Brotherhood President.
Elder Jefferson was a devoted husband, father, brother, uncle, mentor and counselor to many. He is preceded in death by his parents Dennis and Letha Jefferson; brothers Louis Jefferson, Dennis Jefferson Jr. and sister Missionary Elnora Jefferson.
He was married to Mary Louise Anderson Jefferson on December 12, 1970 until her demise on June 28, 1992. Roy was a committed loving father to three children; Tracy Michelle, Kevin Michael, Tawanda Louise “Tee”. After the demise of his wife, he later married Kathy Marie Jourdan on June 19, 1998. They have been married for almost 20 years. To this union, a daughter was added; Janet Diane.
He leaves to cherish his memories his wife, Missionary Kathy Jourdan-Jefferson; his children: Tracy Michelle Lee (Charles), Kevin Michael Jefferson (Adrian), Tawanda Jefferson-Carr and Janet Morgan-Broussard. His grandchildren; Christopher, Taylar, Michael Roy, Rudy Austin, Kevin Charles, Camerron, Jourdan, Trenton and Marian and great-grandchild; Jenifer Azalyah. Two brothers: Elder Thomas Jefferson (Shirley), Charles Jefferson (Cathy) of Canada, one sister Missionary Shirley Little (Deacon Elvis). A host of niece’s, nephew’s and the Norton Temple Family and Friends.
