Roger Sweet, DVM, passed away on Tuesday, the 24th of September 2024, in Houston. He was born on the 13th of August 1936, in Woodbury, Georgia. He grew up in Miami, Florida, graduated from the University of Florida in 1958 where he was a member of Phi Delta Theta fraternity.
He was then commissioned as an Ensign through the Naval OCS program, stationed at Barbers Point Naval Air Station, Hawaii, flying out of Midway Island to the Aleutian Islands and attaining the rank of Lieutenant. He had a private pilots license and enjoyed flying throughout the Hawaiian Islands.
He then attended Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine. After graduation in 1967, he moved to Houston, started Winrock Animal Clinic and practiced small animal medicine and surgery for 35 years. He loved his practice, dealing with clients, as friends, their animals and being supported by his dedicated staff.
He had a passion for the game of golf - especially in Scotland, where he played over 70 courses there. He and his wife, Roberta, loved spending two months every summer in Carnoustie, Scotland, where they had a residence. They traveled extensively, especially enjoying cruises to various countries.
He was a member of Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, Brae Burn Country Club, Carnoustie Golf Club, and Panmure Golf Club.
He leaves behind his wife, Roberta; his sons, Jeff Sweet and his wife Margarita, and Mike Sweet and his wife Catherine; and his grandchildren, Esteban, Jack, Robert, and Elizabeth. He also is survived by his step-sons, Mason Jones and his wife Stacy, and Russell Jones and his wife Taryn; and his step-grandchildren, Griffin, Anderson, Harrison, and Emery.
He enjoyed life, loved his family and loved his country.
A celebration of life is to be conducted at eleven o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 30th of October, in the chapel at Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church, 11612 Memorial Drive in Houston, where Rev. Alf Halvorson, Senior Pastor is to officiate.
Immediately following, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the nearby parlor.
