Roberto Rene Garza, was born on April 15, 1939 to the late Roberto Garza and Hortencia Garza Izaguirre in Monterrey, Mexico. On Wednesday, November 14, 2018, at the age of 79, he joined his wife, Rachel, into eternal life, while surrounded by his three daughters. Robert served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and a portion of Viet Nam. He achieved the rank of Specialist "SPC". After military service, he married Rachel Minerva Garza on December 19th of 1965 in Victoria, Texas at El Macias Methodist Church. He and his wife then moved to Houston. He was employed at McEvoy Company for many years. He proudly earned a "Tool Cutter Grinder" certificate in the engineering division of McEvoy. He then later joined the Metro transportation company in Houston where he became a battery operator there for 22 years. He retired in 2005 to care for Rachel, his wife. Throughout his life, Robert was a devoted Christian of the Baptist faith. He often sang and directed the church choir. He also ministered to many people as part of his service to God. He also served as a Deacon, Treasure, and Usher in his church. One of the proudest moments of his life was becoming a United States citizen at the age of 70 on August 4th 2009, after the military finally found the papers required, fifty years after they were originally filed he earned what was rightfully his. His smile, laughter, and joking will be missed by all his family and friends. He truly had a loving heart.
As a resident of Houston and loving husband to his wife, Rachel Garza for 49 years, he leaves behind his three daughters, Esperanza Hortencia Guzman and her husband Chris of Pasadena, TX, Esmeralda Garza-Torres of Spring, TX, Celita Garza of Houston, TX and born from the heart son, Joshua Hernandez and wife, Emily Joe, also of Houston, TX. His 11 grandchildren include Chris Jr, Ashley, Christen Nicole and Christian Rene Guzman, Johnathan Daniel Garza – Torres, Daniella RL, and Natalie Rae Torres, Rebecca D. Garza, Joshua Jr. and Alisha Hernandez. His great grandchildren are Berlynn and Royal Guzman Rojas, Desiree, Aleah, Yolanda Rachel, Celita, and Fermin Cuellar.
Visitation will be on Thursday, November 29, 2018 from 6:00pm to 9:00pm with a funeral service held Friday, November 30, 2018 at 12:00pm with Pastor John Ward officiating at American Heritage Funeral Home, 10710 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, Texas 77038. A committal service will be held at Houston National Cemetery, with military honors to be rendered at 1:15pm. The family would like for you to join them for a gathering in Roberto’s honor after the committal service on November 30th 2018 at The American Legion Post 578 located at 3415 Aldine Mail Route, Houston, Texas 77039 from 3 PM to 6 PM.
