In 1943, as a young man faced with service to his country during WWII, Bob volunteered to serve in the US Army Air Corps. During his service he flew as a navigator in B17’s, B24’s, B25’s, and B29’s and reached the rank of Lieutenant. He remained in the US Air Force reserves for 23 years, retiring as a major.
He married June Anderson on May 28, 1949. At that time he was attending the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma seeking a degree in Petroleum Engineering, attaining a bachelors and a masters degree. He applied that expertise toward a career at Exxon Mobil that spanned 33 years in research in Tulsa and Houston.
Since his military days Bob’s hobby was flying. He piloted private planes for recreational purposes for 50 years and was president of the Southwest Flying Club for 21 years.
Bob also volunteered once weekly at the Hilshire Village City office since the 1970’s. As a couple, Bob and his wife enjoyed square dancing for 50 years and danced all over the country.
Bob is survived by his devoted wife June, of 72 years, brother Francis Sommer of Tulsa, Oklahoma, many nieces and nephews, and many very close friends.
