Rickey confessed his faith at 7 years of age. He was baptized at Pilgrim Rest Missionary Baptist Church by the late Reverend C. G. Wilkins. At Pilgrim Rest he sang in the Morning Star choir, served as a Junior Usher and was a member of the Cub Scouts. Rickey continued his Christian service at Northchase Community Church which later became New Jerusalem Community Baptist Church. There he was very active in several ministries. He sang in the Men’s Chorus, taught Sunday School, ordained as a Deacon, and served as the Chairman of the Deacon board. He was also a Church Trustee.
Rickey was reared in Houston and a product of the Houston Independent School System. He attended Piney Point Elementary School, R. G. Lockett Junior High School and graduated from Robert E. Lee High School. Then he went to matriculate at Prairie View A & M University. While at Prairie View he pledged Phi Beta Lambda, a Business Fraternity. He was active in the Prairie View Alumni Association and maintained season tickets to the Prairie View football and basketball games.
Rickey was an avid sports fan. While in junior high and high school he participated in baseball, softball and basketball. He really enjoyed playing all sports at the Rasmus Park in the Piney Point Community. He was also a diehard Houston Oilers, Houston Texans, Houston Rockets, and Houston Astros fan.
Rickey’s professional career included many years of service at Deluxe Check Printers, Goodman Air Conditioning Company, and retirement from the Klein Independent School District Police Department.
On June 11, 1977, Rickey united in marriage with Tula Mae Bailey, the love of his life. To this union two children were born, Rickey Vandean and Tinisha Michelle. Rickey was a devoted and loving husband and father. He coached his children and grandchildren in their various sporting activities.
He leaves to cherish his memory his beloved wife, Tula Bailey Wesley; daughter, Tinisha Michelle Wesley Prevost; Son in Law, Darryl Prevost; granddaughter, Trinity Michelle Prevost; grandsons, Darryn Isaac Prevost and Darryl Prevost II; brothers Cleveland Wesley (Lynda), Donald Wesley (Delicia), Paul Wesley; sister in laws, Glory Cruse, Odessa Akinkumni; brother-in-law, Roosevelt Robertson; and a host of other family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Cleveland and Verdell Wesley, his son Rickey Vandean Wesley II, sisters Novella Williams and Patricia Harvey.
