What can you say about Regina Stegent? She is the stuff of which angels are made. She was born in Brenham, Texas to Mike and Annie (Mazen) Krolczyk on December 13, 1921 and left for her heavenly home on July 8, 2021 at the young age of 99 ½.
This beautiful lady met the love of her life at the St. Mary’s Catholic Church dedication when Charles Frank Stegent asked her to dance. They were married on November 11, 1941. Shortly after Charlie was deployed overseas to serve as a medic in the US Military during WWII. During his tour Charlie and Regina lived in Massachusetts where they welcomed their first daughter, Dorothy Ann. Shortly after his tour ended Charlie and Regina settled in the Houston’s Heights area where they welcomed their second daughter, Mary Elizabeth. Four years later in 1952 they built their forever home in Spring Branch.
Oddly enough both Charlie and Regina worked at Sears but at different locations. Regina worked as a sales clerk until she retired after 30 years. Some perks of her job were discounts on clothing for all her grandkids and she took full advantage of this.
But what Regina loved the most was family time. She was the most loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, sister and friend. Her chicken soup Sundays where what legends are made of or at least our most vivid memories. A meal which included her famous homemade chicken soup and cookies, pies, cakes or brownies which were out of this world. There is no doubt all her love went into each and every meal and dessert she made. If you could have seen our Christmas eve at her house you would have believed she was the one true Santa. Presents filled the entire living room and each person would have to pick a different area in the house to open gifts.
Regina went through many difficulties during her life. The loss of her love Charlie on April 4, 1972, the loss of her sight during her 60’s, several floods, hearing loss, and stokes which left her unable to be as mobile as she would have liked but this lady was as sharp as they come and never lost her faith in the Lord. She would pray the rosary for anyone who would ask for her prayers and with eight grandkids and thirteen great grandkids she prayed a lot! At one point she was up to 17 rosaries a day. Her love did not just extend to her immediate family. Her family also included the nursing home staff. Their love for her helped carry her through each day especially during Covid when her visitations were restricted. She loved everyone and was one of the most kind and generous women you could every meet. She is with the Lord and no longer suffers and for that we are grateful but as we are selfish by nature our hearts would have loved for her to stay with us. Until we meet again our angel watches over us.
Regina leaves behind her daughters, Dorothy Kuciemba and husband Tony, Mary Pawlawski and husband Henry, eight grandkids, thirteen great grandkids, extended family and friends.
She is proceeded in death by her husband, Charles Stegent, her parents, Mike and Annie Krolczyk, her brother Mike, Jr., her sisters, Maggie Flisowski, Cecelia Urban, and Frances Przeklasa, and numerous cousins and friends.
