Raymond A. Proto died in his sleep Nov. 13, 2011 having just celebrated his 90th birthday. He was born in Philadelphia on Nov. 7, 1921, one of twelve siblings. During WWII he served in the Army Air Corps where he earned 8 Oak Leaf Clusters and a Presidential Citation. His war days were difficult memories for him but what the war took away was replaced when he married the love of his life, Carmella, in 1947. She has been waiting in heaven for him since 1981.
Ray retired from a career in the US Post Office. In spite of always working two jobs, he found time to start the family that those who knew him understood was his whole life. He moved to Houston ten years ago to be near his son, Rod and daughter-in-law, Linda, who he could not have loved more if she was his own; and their children Richard, Steven, Carrie and Tim. Ray's daughter, Linda Mariposa Marangia, and her spouse Dan, reside in Denver with four more grand children, Amanda, John, Janelle and Marisol.
Ray had a full life and was very active all the time. Until his recent illness he was a volunteer at Memorial Hermann Hospital and was always busy socializing. If you played cards with him you needed to be sure to bring plenty of cash. In death his wish is for you to know that he was very happy about his life and the family he had around him. His desire was that rather than mourn his death with flowers that die too soon, his happiness be celebrated with donations to Volunteer Service Scholarship fund, Memorial Hermann Memorial City Medical Center 12335 Kingsride Lane #137, Houston, Texas 77024 in the hope that the good your donations do will bring some happiness and opportunity to those who have been less fortunate than he.
Visitation for family and friends will be held Wednesday November 16th from 5-8 pm at Earthman Funeral Directors. A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 am, Thursday November 17th at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, 11720 Joan of Arc Street, Houston, TX 77024.
