At the age of 15, Ray confessed Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and was baptized into the Christian faith uniting with Eighth Street Church of God in Christ, Houston, Texas.
He attended Booker T. Washington High School, Houston, Texas where he met his teenage sweetheart Mary Jones. They became young parents of a beautiful daughter Evelyn in 1953.
From high school Ray served his country in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1955. While in the service Ray met his first wife Marietta McNabb, they were married in 1955 and later divorced in 1968. To this union were born three beautiful daughters Rhenee, Cheryl and Yvonne.
Ray married his second wife Audrey Johnson in 1969 and they remained together for 52 years until he made his transition.
Ray was employed primarily as an independent contractor. He also worked for AT&T and the Village of Maywood Department of Public Works. When he relocated back to his hometown, Houston, Texas, he worked several independent contractor jobs and as a driver for Jones Delivery (Hot Shot).
Ray was a hardworking family oriented man whose friendliness, love and care for others was obvious to everyone. He was loved by all that knew him because of his big heart and grand smile. He didn’t mind giving good advice or guidance. He never met a stranger, he would talk to you until he found something in common with you and he usually did.
Ray loved being on the go. His favorite saying was “I‘m not going to sit around and wait to die.” We nick-named him “Gotta Go.” He had to be on the go and these were some of his happiest times. He traveled to China, Mexico, Hawaii and many other places in the United States. He loved driving Hot Shot so he could go places and meet people.
Ray departed this life on July 29, 2020, and leaves to cherish his memories a loving wife, Audrey; three daughters, Rhenee Thomas Mitchell (Collin), Cheryl Davidson and Yvonne Spence (Edrick); three step-children, Anita Pickett (Kirby), Mark Johnson (Connie) and Gail Johnson; two brothers, Robert Robinson (Betty) and Raymond Robinson; brother/cousin Charles Robinson (Dolorita); twelve grandchildren Bridget, Remunda, Jerald, Brandy, Sohella, Yuwaune, Kanika, Ray, Kyshaun, Rhequan, Senita and Shevonne; eleven step-grandchildren Yusef (Angela), Maurice (Corbin), Ashton, Marques, Sherri, Terrence, Avery, Amber, Brittany, Brigette and Robert Jr.; twenty great-grandchildren, nine step-great-grandchildren, five great-great-grandchildren; God son Lonnie Turner and a host of relatives, loved ones and friends.
