She was born on May 18, 1925, in Wellsville, New York, to James and Florence Schram Brownell. They were a hard working, second generation family of German immigrants. She was the oldest of seven children and worked with her family on their small dairy farm in the countryside of Scio, New York.
She is survived by her three children: Lura Marie Crawford (husband Dr. Harry Crawford), Terry Lee Winborn (wife Ruth Winborn), Phyllis Gail Johnson (husband Jim Johnson), and Bashir Khan, whom Phyllis and Steve welcomed into their home from Pakistan in 1985 (wife Ellen Khan).
Her legacy lives on in her treasured grandchildren: Robert Todd Nelson, Vicki Nelson, Courtney Ramsey, Ashley Reinhardt and step grandchildren Jay Johnson, Kevin Roberts, Kam Daniel and Kayla Albrecht. She was blessed with several nieces and nephews, 15 great grandchildren and 3 great, great grandchildren. Dick Trippel has been a dear friend to Phyllis over the last twenty years.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband Steve, of 54 years, her parents, brothers, sisters, a grandchild, and two great grandchildren. Though the family deeply mourns her loss, they take comfort in knowing that Phyllis is now reunited with Steve and other members of her precious family.
Phyllis was working in a restaurant in Wellsville, NY, when Stephen Abbey Winborn, a member of a geophysical crew, came in for coffee one morning. The coffee must have been good because he came in every day until he asked her out. After Steve and Phyllis were married, she was introduced to the first of many culture shocks. Steve took her to southern Mississippi where she was quickly accepted as part of the Winborn family. During the years of their marriage, they moved more than 70 times and lived on three continents before retiring in Houston, Texas. When Steve would come home and say, “We are moving next week”, she would be packed and ready to go! Phyllis could make any house a home. She enjoyed being involved in the lives of her children. She was a den mother to eight rambunctious Cub Scouts, helped with school homework, went to numerous dance recitals and kept her family organized and hosted some great birthday parties.
Phyllis was a past president of the Houston Geophysical Auxiliary of Houston and Women’s Westbury United Methodist Church, Women's Circle. She excelled at bridge and played golf with Steve.
Phyllis was beloved by her family, friends and community. We miss her dearly and rejoice in knowing that we will see her again someday. A private family service will be held Saturday, November 23rd at 11AM under the direction of Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home.
Flowers are appreciated, however an expression of love in lieu of flowers may be sent to the Trevor Wade Daniel Foundation, 1833 PR 3341, Greenville, Texas 75402
