She finally won her battle against Alzheimer’s. She was surrounded by loved ones in her final moments. She was born on September 18, 1935, in Butternut, Wisconsin. Her parents were Agnes and Carl Zimmerman. She was a self proclaimed "Flambeau School dropout" and worked on the family farm until she moved to Chicago at 16 years of age. She always said that she cherished her childhood on the farm.
Later she moved to Rockford, Illinois, where she became a telephone switchboard operator for Illinois Bell Telephone Company. There she met Wallace Krueger, whom she married in 1958. They were married for 39 years. She loved her four children and three step children dearly. She had a green thumb, loved gardening and always brought in peonies or lilacs from her garden to make the house smell pretty. Her love of trees and nature was evident, especially the spruce trees on the farm. She held a special place in her heart for all animals, but especially her dog, Bear. Her baking talent was extraordinary. She is famous for her gingersnap cookies still to this day.
Her faith was very strong; she was a lifelong member of First Lutheran Church in Rockford, Illinois. She loved polka music and drinking a nice cold beer. We will always remember her as a loving, caring, and strong woman who loved to laugh. She was genuine and honest and feisty.
Her caregivers at the memory care facility were all very loving and caring. Special thanks to Regina and Brenda, her Hospice nurses, and her caregivers at the Auberge, Nimota, David, Mercy, Tayo, Omo, Roxanne, Ashley Ketring, Tedrina, Xiomara Jandres, Michael, Tammy, Linda, Miyesha, and Obiajulu. Their gentle loving care made her feel right at home in her final years.
We know that she has been restored with a new body, mind and angel wings to fly happily back to Butternut.
She is predeceased by her parents, her brother, Gene, her sister, Alice, her husband, Wally, her son, Douglas, and her grandson, Jon.
She is survived by her children, David (Trina) Krueger, Daniel Krueger, Darla (Hemang) Thakkar, her daughter in law, Maria Figiel-Krueger, her stepchildren, Gayle Foster, Richard Krueger, and Pam Webster, and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Funeral to be held at a later date. Memorial gifts may be sent directly to The Alzheimer’s Foundation.
