With reverence, we announce the death of Noe P. Mercado of Houston, Texas, on January 9, 2024. He died peacefully at home in Houston. He was 87. Noe was born to Hipolito Mercado and Severa Perez, on September 26, 1936, in San Antonio, Texas, the 4th of seven children.
He grew up on San Carlos St., on San Antonio’s west side where he attended and graduated from Lanier High School. Promptly after his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and finished basic training in San Diego. He was stationed at Camp Pendleton Marine Corps based in Oceanside, California. Noe and Evangeline (Vangie) Herrera were married in San Antonio in 1958. Vangie joined him in Oceanside immediately after the wedding. They remained married until 1975. He met and remained with his life partner, Yaemi McInerny until she died in 2021.
Noe completed his military service in 1959. Soon after, his first and only child, Noe Anthony Mercado was born. Noe began working to support his family and made a career as a United States Postal Service mail carrier in Carlsbad, California. He retired from the USPS with a full pension at age 55. In 1970, he studied and passed exams to be a certified income tax preparer. In his more than 50 years of preparing tax returns, he helped thousands of clients until he sold his practice at age 85.
Noe adored his pets and meticulously cared for his pet dogs, Yuki and later Tina and Coco. He enjoyed walking them every day and chatting with other dog owners in Oceanside.
In Carlsbad, Noe was an active member of the community. He volunteered his time in numerous ways, including founding the first Carlsbad Pop Warner League in 1971. He was elected president of the league by his peers the same year. Noe was incredibly generous and helped countless people, particularly young men and women who came from lesser means, with financial and moral support. All his grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and stepchildren recall times in their lives when he demonstrated his willingness and ability to support them with his kindness. He enjoyed watching and talking about major league baseball and NFL football. He loved dancing and bowling.
Noe was preceded in death by his wives, Evangeline Powell and Yaemi McInerny; his brothers David Mercado and Ruben Singletary; his sister Esther Pacheco; stepdaughter Shannon McInerny and his parents Hipolito and Severa.
