Nancy Louise Smither Smith was born on February 9, 1925, in Huntsville, TX and passed away on June 8, 2021, at the age of 96. She was raised on a farm outside of Huntsville. She married M. Gerald “G” Smith in 1946 and remained faithfully by his side for 74 years. They lived most of that time in Westview Terrace in the Spring Branch area of Houston.
Nancy held various jobs prior to marriage, from working at a drugstore soda fountain to pouring melted steel at a gun plant into molds for gun barrels to be used on ships during WWII. She later moved into bookkeeping jobs until she left the workforce to stay home and start a family. Together she and G raised two children, Karon and Glenn. Their social life consisted primarily of backyard cookouts with friends and neighbors and family get-togethers.
Nancy was very involved in Girl Scouts and other school and extracurricular activities of her kids. She enjoyed baking and cooking for her family, always making sure a proper meal was served. She sewed most of her daughter’s childhood clothes, and over her lifetime made an impressive number of quilts, crocheted afghans, and other handcrafted items. A favorite outing was an annual trip to the Houston quilt show. Nancy always had beautiful flowers growing in her yard and spent many hours watching birds that would gather at her birdbaths.
After her children left for college, Nancy returned to work at Spring Branch Independent School District and enjoyed her co-workers there a great deal. She and G also traveled quite a bit with groups organized by his employer and had many good memories from those trips. They built a weekend home near Riverside, TX and hosted a number of family get-togethers there.
As a young single woman, Nancy loved to go dancing and she continued to be interested in country music through the years. A story her children like to tell is about was when they realized that one of their favorite nightclubs to hear music, Fitzgerald’s, was in the same building as a dancehall their mother used to frequent as a 20-year-old in the 1940s.
Nancy was close to her sisters and other family members and enjoyed spending time with them. She was a great Mamma to her grandchildren and a willing babysitter when needed.
Nancy is survived by her daughter, Karon Smith Mueller, son-in-law Paul T. Mueller, son Glenn Gerald Smith, and daughter-in-law Jeanie Lopez Smith. Nancy’s grandchildren are Kevin Smith (and Jennifer), Melissa Borders (and Chris), Michael Smith, Ben Mueller (and Stella), Daniel Mueller, and Will Mueller. Great-grandchildren are Miles and Levi Smith and Evie Borders. She is preceded in death by her husband Morris Gerald Smith, father Allan Thomason Smither, her mother Erma Wellborn, sisters Erma Ella Jones, Mary Allan Voigt, and Emily Elizabeth Childs, and three half-brothers, Allan Marquis Smither, Miles Eugene Smither, and Douglas Laverne Smither.
Visitation will be held on June 13 at 11 a.m. The funeral service will commence at 12 p.m., followed by a reception and then graveside service at 2:30 p.m.
