Michael Monroe Smith, known to many as “Coach Smith,” devoted husband, father, and “Paw Paw” to six cherished grandchildren, went to be with his beloved daughter, Emily, in heaven on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at the age of 75.
Born on May 25, 1949, born in, Oklahoma, Michael lived an extraordinary life, overcoming early hardship when he was dropped off at an orphanage by his mother at the age of five. Despite facing a difficult beginning, he went on to put himself through school, ultimately earning a master's degree in education. For 30 years, “Coach Smith” touched countless lives as a teacher and coach, inspiring students with his dedication, humor, and passion for football—although he’d be the first to tell you, his patience for another Cowboys loss was limited.
Known for his generosity, Michael would give anyone the shirt off his back—and, more often than not, you had to watch out because he just might give you his pants too. No matter the need, he was the first to show up at your door with a plan, a solution, and everything you'd need to tackle the problem. His kindness extended to all creatures great and small—he never met an animal he didn’t love.
A devoted Catholic, Michael found joy in sharing his faith and family, and his laughter was contagious, especially when telling his favorite stories for the 12th time—just to get a chuckle out of himself.
He is survived by his wife, Nan; sons, Christopher and Joseph; daughters, Sarah and Erica, his six adored grandchildren, Lilly, Beau, Emily, Taylor, Charlie, Cash and his beloved fur babies, Miley, Cookie, Baby, and Bella.
A graveside service for Michael will be held Tuesday, November 19, 2024 from 3:00 PM to 3:45 PM at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77077. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you bring dog food or treats to be donated to a shelter.
