Melba Jean (Poskey) Scarborough, born and raised in Nacogdoches, Texas, on February 8, 1935, passed on to her Lord and Savior on March 18, 2015. She was predeceased by her parents, Joe R. and Ardie (Perry) Poskey, ex-husband and father of her children, Wayne Norris and grandson, James Lacy. She is survived by Donald, her loving and devoted husband of 33 years, and a veteran of the United States Navy. She is also survived by three daughters: Deborah Ryan (Dewey), grandchildren Garrett Lacy (Willow) and Steve Ryan; Diane Hunter (John), grandchildren Heather Trexler (Scott), great-grandchildren Madison and Kylie, and Joel Hunter (Brittany), great-grandson Jay; Dorothy Elder (Mitch), grandchildren Mitchell and Margo; and one son, David Norris (Tammi), grandchild Travis (Laura) and great-grandchildren Kristen, Brody, and Luna. She is also survived by three stepchildren Selena Foster (Mike), grandchildren Brittany Astorga (Steven), great-grandchildren Mileena and Kyree, and Olivia; Gwen York Drews (Tim), grandchildren Blake and Kyle; and Norman Scarborough (Toni), grandchildren Dustin and Alyssa. Additional survivors are sisters Margaret Triana (Jimmy) and Bettye Fitzsimmons, nieces Theresa, Vickie, Tracy, Amy, Sarah; nephews Mark, Jason, Murry, Bruce, Nestor, and numerous great nieces and great nephews who all loved her dearly.
Melba's life was centered around her family, her church, her love of flowers and gardening, and collecting antiques. She was a 10-year volunteer, followed by six years as assistant manager for St. Christopher's Thrift Shop. In addition, Melba was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary, serving as Patriotic Instructor and Co-Chair of the Americanism Program, along with Mary Peska. They led programs on patriotism to schoolchildren in the Spring Branch area schools.
Melba's family ancestry dates back to the early Spanish Settlers of Nacogdoches (late 1600s). She is as Texan as one can possibly be. She was a life-long Catholic, with parents and ancestors buried in the church cemetery of the Moral community of Nacogdoches. Since 1965, she has been a member of St. Cecilia Catholic Church in the Spring Branch/Memorial area of Houston.
The family received visitors on Monday, March 23, from 6:00-8:00 PM, with a Rosary at 7:00 PM, at Waltrip Funeral Directors, 1415 Campbell Road, Houston. Funeral Services were held on Tuesday, March 24, at 12:30 PM at the Houston National Cemetery Chapel, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, where Melba was laid to rest.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church (Moral), Highway 7-Spanish Bluff Road, Nacogdoches, TX 75964; or to the VFW Post #8790, 1560 Foley, Houston, TX 77055; or to the charity of your choice.
She was dearly loved and will be greatly missed by family and friends every single day of the rest of our lives.
