Dr. Max Butler

Dr. Butler was born in Lufkin, Texas, on the 27th of August 1931. He is survived by his wife Barbara Cernan Butler; his sister, Mary; his three sons: Bryan, Robert, and John David; his step-daughter Tracy; and his grandchildren: Camille, Maye, Rachel, Emily, Nicole, Hunter, Lauren, Ashley, Katelyn, and Whitney.

Upon graduation from Baylor University, he served his country in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps where he was assigned to the division of scientific and professional personnel in research and development. Upon discharge from the U.S. Army he earned his Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. He practiced as a Family Physician from 1960 until his death. Dr. Butler served in leadership capacities in the following professional, civic, and business organizations: University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston Alumni Association, Texas A&M School of Veterinary Medicine Development Board, Texas State Board of Medical Examiners, University of Texas System Cancer Center Physician’s Advisory Committee, University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Family Practice and Community, Medicine Search Committee, Federation of State Licensing Board, National Board of Medical Examiners, Board of Directors, Rosewood Hospital, President of Staff, Memorial Hospital System, Harris County Medical Society, Texas Medical Association, American Medical Association, Gulf Coast IPA, Harris County Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Academy of Family Physicians, American Academy of Family Physicians, Houston Academy of Medicine, Houston Museum of Medical Science, Houston Museum of Natural Science, Rosewood Family Physicians, HEI, Inc. and Beard Builders Incorporated.

In addition to the partial listing above, Dr. Butler was particularly honored by his affiliation with, and service to, the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo where he served as a Lifetime Vice President. He was also proud to be member of the Tejas Vaqueros where he served as a member of the Board of Directors and received the “Outstanding Trail Rider Award.”

Dr. Butler was honored by the Texas Medical Association by being named the 2008 Texas Medical Association Distinguished Service Award recipient. In addition, he is an Ashbel Smith Distinguished Alumnus Award (UTMB Galveston) recipient and John H. Clark Leadership Award (Federation of State Medical Boards of the United States) recipient. He has received numerous other awards and fellowships in recognition of his service to medicine and his community.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful team of doctors who cared for him during his illness.

Friends are cordially invited to a visitation with the family from five o’clock in the afternoon until eight o’clock in the evening on Tuesday, the 22nd of February, in the Library of Geo. H. Lewis & Sons, 1010 Bering Drive in Houston.

The funeral service is to be conducted at ten o’clock in the morning on Wednesday, the 23rd of February, in the Sanctuary of Second Baptist Church, 6400 Woodway Drive in Houston.

Immediately following the service, all are invited to greet the family during a reception in the Deacon’s Parlor.

The family will then gather for a private graveside service and interment at Memorial Oaks Cemetery in Houston.
