MARY LOUISE “JIMMIE” CURTIS SAMPLE, age 95, passed away Thursday, March 28, 2013 in Houston, Texas. Jimmie was born to James Still Curtis and Ollie May Williams Curtis on August 13, 1917 in Matagorda, Texas. She grew up in the Heights in Houston, graduated from Rice University, earned her Bachelor’s teaching degree from The University of Texas, and later earned a Master’s degree in Education from The University of Houston. “Miss” Sample spent nearly forty wonderful years teaching 2nd grade students in Richmond, Texas and in Houston ISD. During WWII, she had up to 44 students in a very crowded classroom! While at UT, Jimmie met her perfect love and soul mate, Richard Langford “R.L.” Sample, Jr. They were happily married for 58 years enjoying traveling, weekend farming, dancing , and parties with friends and family. Jimmie was always the perfect lady and hostess. She was very brave after losing R.L. in 2000 and greatly missed him everyday of the rest of her life. Jimmie was a longtime member of Second Baptist Church and especially loved The Encouragers Class and the Mission Committee. Jimmie is survived by her “son” & “daughter” Tim & Diana McCommon, “grandchildren” Chuck, Dorota, Scotty & Ben McCommon; honorary children & grandchildren, Karen & Jerry Woolf, Lindsey Woolf, Kristin & Kennedy Crawford; Ann & Ed Davis, Marc & Scott; nieces,Donna Sue Whitworth of Tomball, Texas, Linda Walton & husband Joel of Baton Rouge, LA; Carole Brakhage & husband Hal of Green Oak, MI; Debbie Hardy and husband Bill of W. Monroe, LA; Sheila Joy Sample of Baytown, TX; nephews, Richard Sample of Glenwood, ARK; along with many great nieces and nephews, friends and extended family. Jimmie was lovingly cared for in her last years by her incredibly kind and compassionate caregivers Bernice Robinson, Areceli Lawson, Katie Cramer, Monica Flowers, Annie Benton, Doris Davis, Martha Diaz de Leon and the late Carrie Woodson. A special thank you also goes to all of her doctors, especially Dr. Mark Hausknecht and his staff for their caring and expertise. Jimmie was a lady of great faith, integrity, love of life and a sassy sense of style and humor! She will be greatly missed by all.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 7:00 PM, Sunday, March 31, 2013 at Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 9:30 AM., Monday, April 1, 2013 in the Chapel of Forest Park Westheimer Funeral Home. Interment to follow.
