Mary Jeannine Washburn Hethcock (age 64) passed away on May 12, 2021 in Houston, Texas. Mary was born on November 6, 1956 in St. Joseph’s Hospital in Houston, Texas to William (Bill) McDonald Washburn and Margaret Jeannine Schmitt Washburn. She was the fourth in a family of seven children.
Mary attended Holy Ghost Catholic School and St. Agnes Academy in Houston. Her college years were spent at Stephen F. Austin in Nacogdoches and at Texas State University (formerly Southwest Texas State University) in San Marcos where she studied botany. Mary was married to a naval pilot and together they spent time in Japan. While there Mary taught English to groups of Japanese adults. She loved the Eastern culture and returned to the US when she was expecting her son in the mid 1980’s.She lived for a time at the Naval Air Station Chase Field in Beeville, Texas when her son was young and always enjoyed shopping at the PX. Later, she lived in the San Diego, California area and took advantage of the wonderful weather by taking long walks.Mary returned to her home state of Texas and was able to live the remainder of her life in Austin and Houston.Mary was preceded in death by her brother, Joseph McDonald Washburn and mother, Margaret Jeannine Washburn. She is survived by her father, Bill Washburn, son, Dustin Duane Hethcock, four brothers John William Washburn (Judith), James Michael Washburn (Rosie), Thomas Patrick Washburn (Cody), Robert Andrew Washburn (Monique) and sister Margaret Lee Manley (Don) and numerous nieces and nephews.A special thank you to Mary’s life-long friends Ellen Harless and Alina Nungesser who were very helpful to Mary during the last few years of her life.
