Martha Fambrough Hay, age 85, lost her year long battle with cancer on December 23, 2019. She is no longer hurting and has been made whole again in the Promised Land. She was welcomed with open arms by her loved ones that have passed before her and her family has gained a new guardian angel.
Martha grew up in Atlanta, GA where she graduated from Piedmont Nursing School. Following graduation, she and three of her friends traveled to Texas for vacation, where they learned that MD Anderson was hiring, as it was a fairly new hospital at that time in Houston. Martha applied for a job as a Scrub Nurse in the Operating Room (as did her friends). They were all hired and moved to Texas to start their new lives. Martha was the only one that stayed as she met the love her life while working there. She met Richard C. Hay, MD an anesthesiologist who was a widowed father raising his three children. They married in March of 1957 and shortly thereafter added three more children to their family. After a short nursing career, Martha devoted her life to her husband and to raising their 6 children in a loving and caring home.
Martha is predeceased by her husband of 41 years, Richard C. Hay MD, her daughter Sandra Hay Zeek and her son Bradford Taylor Hay. She is survived by her sons Richard C. Hay, Jr., William Woodbury Hay as well as her daughters Anne Hay Lockwood and Holly Kathryn Hay. She is also survived by twelve wonderful grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren (two of which will make their debut in early 2020). She remarked one time recently that her grandchildren and her great grandchildren were her reason for getting up every morning and were her most favorite source of joy in her life.
Martha's laughter, her wit and her sense of humor will be missed by all who loved her. Her strength and legacy will live on through her children and her children's children.
There will be a graveside service at Memorial Oaks Cemetery on January 3, 2020 at 10 am, followed by a Celebration of Life in her honor at 12 noon at the Eagles Trace Retirement Community at 14703 Eagle Vista Drive, Houston, TX.
