On Friday, October 06, 2023, Maria Elizondo Flores passed on peacefully at the age of 96. She was a devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and great great grandmother who loved to laugh, dance, entertain, and sing ranchera and mariachi music.
A child of sharecroppers, Maria grew up during the Depression, which began a long life of finding joy and perseverance in difficult times. She lost her father, Bernardo Bazan Elizondo, at the age of five, but spoke often of his time as a POW in Germany during WW1. Her mother, Emma Garza Elizondo, was left a widow to manage the crops, raise six children, and await the birth of her seventh child.
Maria was a 16-year-old bride and a 17-year-old mother who raised six children of her own in Edinburg, Texas with her husband Alfredo. She felt that her greatest accomplishment was that she taught her children to be hard working, patriotic, and generous. She will be remembered for her love of song, a boisterous laugh, a child-like innocence, delicious tamales and empanadas, and tradition of hosting a full house for every holiday and special occasion.
She is survived by her six children- Elisandro Flores (Elma), Alfredo Flores Jr. (Linda), Fernando Flores, Maria Ana Flores (Joy), Ninfa Arena (Ron) and Azucena Flores- their children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchild.
The family would like to thank Comfy Home and Choice Hospice for Maria's care in her final days. The family is hosting a visitation on Wednesday, October 11, 2023 from 2:00pm-8:00pm at Funeraria Del Angel 5100 North Fwy. Houston, Tx 77022. Maria will be laid to rest in Edinburg, Texas, next to her husband, Alfredo.
