Margarita Cantu Barradas

Margarita was born in Los Fresnos, Texas to Rosa and Federico Cantu. She was the youngest of 11 children. She is predeceased by her parents, her four sisters, six brothers, and her beloved daughter Yvonne Barradas Akin.

She was a graduate of Saint Mary’s Nursing School in Galveston, Texas. A nurse for 39 years, she spent her last 25 years teaching nursing and was the Director of University of Texas at Brownsville’s nursing program. She was a devoted Catholic, Mother, family member and nurse. She retired to help care for her two granddaughters, Meredith O’Neal- Flatley and Stephanie Jean Akin in 1991. An active member of Saint Anne Church, she served as a member of the Women’s Guild, the Alter Society and helped their Hispanic community by teaching English as a second language. A woman committed to service and work who loved gardening, the ocean and fishing.

She is survived by her daughter Margaret Barradas O’Neal and her husband Timothy O’Neal, her granddaughter Meredith O’Neal Flatley and her husband Michael Flatley, and her granddaughter Stephanie Jean Akin.

A mass will be held at 10:00 am at Saint Anne Catholic Church, 2140 Westheimer Road on Friday October 21st. Visitation will be from 9:15 am till prior to the start of mass. A reception will follow at the home of her daughter Margaret located at 2413 Pelham Drive, Houston, Texas.
