Margarette L. Powell, 90, of Lufkin, Texas, passed away Sunday, Oct. 20, 2013, after a brief illness. Margarette, fondly known as “Marg,” was born in Houston, Texas, Sept. 27, 1923, to Myra Eason Hutton and Homer Lonzo Hutton. She graduated from San Jacinto High School in Houston in 1942. She married Harry Lawrence Powell on April 5, 1945. She retired from the City of Houston Water Department after 25 years of service. For many years afterwards she volunteered, including knitting caps for newborns, at local hospitals in Houston. Later in life she and her sister Myra (Punk) Jordan extensively traveled; their favorite trip was to Jerusalem. Her husband of nearly 40 years, her parents, and her sister precede her in death. Survivors include her son Ronnie Powell and his wife Rita of New Braunfels; her daughter Stephanie Hathorn of New Mexico; her grandson Sidney Munlin and his wife Debra of Lufkin; her grandson R. Rae Powell and his wife Amanda of San Antonio. She is also survived by her brother Milton Hutton and sister-in-law Nelwyn of Houston; her great-grandchild Alexandra Munlin of Lufkin; and step-great-grandchildren Madeline, Avalee and Tasman Lenard of Okinawa, Japan. Funeral services will be held at the Main Chapel of Forest Park Lawndale in Houston, at 1:30 p.m., Friday, Oct. 25. Graveside services will follow. Pallbearers will be her grandsons, nephews Gene Powell, Robert Powell and Rick Jordan, and family friend Ed (Peewee) Babb. In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be given to the Youth Department of her church, Cokesbury United Methodist Church, 10030 Scarsdale Blvd., Houston, TX 77089.
