After high school, she entered the U.S. Army Medical Nursing Corp. in 1943 and trained as an RN at N.C. Baptist Hospital in Winston Salem, N.C. She graduated in 1946 and continued to work as a surgical floor supervisor and operating room scrub nurse till 1952. She married in 1950 to William “Frank” Woodward and was married for 64 years.
Mae was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother. She loved to bake, cook, sew, and care for those around her. She was a member of Memorial Drive United Methodist Church, the Bridgebuilders Sunday School Class, and Noah Choir, and was active with Soupmobile and MAM.
Mae was preceded in death by her husband, William “Frank” Woodward and youngest son, Joe Woodward; also brothers Edward and Joe Deese; sisters Emma McDaniel, Thelma Cox, Ruth Sawyer, and Mary Deese.
She is survived by sons, Frank Woodward, Jr. of Houston, and John Woodward, of Austin; daughter, Kit Bartlett and son-in-law, Bo Bartlett of Houston; three grandchildren, Rachel Woodward, Katie Bartlett Osborne and husband John Osborne, and Will Bartlett, great-granddaughter, Avery Osborne.
Burial will take place at Memorial Oaks Cemetery on Saturday, November 29, 2014, at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Memorial Drive United Methodist Church Missions.
The family would like to thank Dr. Miguel Franco and Nurse Blanco for their excellent care and her dedicated caregivers, Brittany Meehan, Carolyn Johnson, Gwen Johnson, and Dale Preston.
