Lynette Shu-Chuan (Cheng) Wei, affectionately known to many as Wei Mama, peacefully went home to her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 92 on May 12, 2022 in Stafford, Texas, surrounded by her family. Born in Ningbo, China in 1930, Lynette was the third child of a successful textile merchant who sent her to study at Mary Farnham’s School for Girls in high school. He duly warned her to learn only the English they taught, not their religion. God, however, mercifully intervened, and it was at this school that she received Jesus as her Savior. Anticipating the fall of Shanghai, her father sent her and two siblings to Taiwan, where she graduated from National Taiwan University in 1951. As her love for the Lord deepened, she devoted herself to full-time ministry. In 1956, she married Chien Chang Wei. Together, they raised 5 daughters, and they served the Lord together for 57 years in Taiwan, Los Angeles and Houston until his death in 2013.
Joyful. Generous. Selfless. These words describe the beautiful life Lynette lived as a wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great grandmother, friend, and spiritual mentor to many. The Lord gifted and enabled Lynette to simultaneously work full-time outside the home so that her husband could focus on church ministry responsibilities; care for her children, from preparing home-cooked meals to editing high school English papers; and serve in the church, attending many meetings and visiting the church family during the week. In Taiwan, Lynette taught English in Taichung First Senior High School for 10 years, then she taught English at Taipei First Girls’ High School from 1969-1974. When the family immigrated to the United States in 1975, Lynette worked as an office manager for a Chinese import-export company in Los Angeles, CA for 8 years, followed by various jobs when the family moved to Houston, Texas in 1982. She served the Lord full-time with her husband at Houston Christian Assembly for 40 years, lovingly hosting brothers and sisters in her home on Tambourine Drive for fellowship and meetings, always welcoming them with a bountiful spread of food, and counseling and encouraging many brothers and sisters in the Lord, treating them as her own family. How she served God in Houston was reflective of how God used her wherever He planted her.
She was preceded in death by her husband Chien Chang Wei and her nephew Frank Zheng, and is survived by her daughters Catherine Wang (Taifu), Florence Chang (Paul), Alice Yong (Hailong), Vickie Wei (Jeff Kao), and Gloria King (Chip); sisters Rebecca Nee and Cijuan Zheng; 12 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren (with one more on the way); nephews Johnson Nee, Philip Zheng (Helen), and Steve Wei (Elaine), their children; great-grandniece Erin Cheng (Alex), their children; and many more beloved relatives.
Visitation will be Friday, May 20th, from 3:00-5:00 PM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, TX. A memorial service will be held at Houston Christian Assembly, 10565 Westoffice Drive, Houston, TX on Saturday, May 21st, from 10:00-11:30 AM followed by a Burial Service at 1:30 PM at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home.
Lynette was always so grateful for the loving missionaries in China who led her to a saving faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be sent to two organizations, Lynette supported during her life. These organizations faithfully proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ and tangibly demonstrate His love to people in need around the world.
Billy Graham Evangelistic Association
Founded by Billy Graham in 1950, BGEA exists to proclaim the Gospel of Jesus Christ by every effective means and to equip the church and others to do the same.
Samaritan’s Purse
This nondenominational, evangelical Christian organization provides spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world, by helping to meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing God’s love through His Son, Jesus Christ.
