Lydia Lee Cheung

She is survived by son Hubert (Betsy) Cheung, daughter Nita Cheung, grandsons Ryan, Michael (Sarah), and Jonathan Cheung; nephews and nieces from her brother, the late George C.P. Lee of Los Angeles - Herbert Lee, Richard (Marilyn) Lee, Amy (James) Chew, Cynthia (Leslie) Lew, and Flora (Aldo) Noë, and numerous grand-nephews and grand-nieces; sisters-in-law Fai-Chuey Cheung of Chicago, Fai-King (Henry) Chan of Los Angeles and Fai-Yiu (Rev. Daniel) Hu of Houston.

Born in Guangzhou, China on November 12, 1926, Lydia was the 3rd and youngest child of Paul and Sui-Lan Wong Lee.

She received her accounting degree in Guangzhou, and taught at the Pui Doh Baptist Children's School.

In 1952, Lydia's fiancée, Lok-Tin Cheung felt the call to ministry while studying abroad at Baylor University, and asked that she leave Hong Kong and join him to train and study at the New Orleans Theological Seminary. They married there, both received their masters in religious education, and began their ministry at the New Orleans Presbyterian Church.

They were then called by the Southern Baptist Home Mission Board to be home missionaries to the Chinese Baptist Mission in El Paso. After almost four years of ministry in El Paso, they were transferred to the Chinese Baptist Church in Houston.

Lydia spent the next three decades in service alongside Rev. Cheung at Chinese Baptist, teaching Sunday School, playing piano, singing in the adult choir, leading Bible studies, and driving up to three shifts of children from the north side and downtown Houston to and from Sunday morning services. She also taught summer Chinese language school and Vacation Bible School classes. She was a fervent reader of the Bible, and was a stalwart and resolute disciple of prayer.

She loved the passage found in 1 Corinthians 15:58 - "So then, dear brothers and sisters, stand firm, let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain."
