OBITUARY: MR LUIS NNAEMEKA IKWUEKE (1942 – 2024)

Luis, our beloved brother, was born on August 25th, 1942, to Hon. Sir Richard and Lady Agnes Ikwueke. In 1955, he was admitted to Government Secondary School, Owerri, where he excelled in sports, with hockey and cricket being his favorites. After completing his secondary school education, and passing the West African School Certificate with flying colors, he attended Yaba College of Technology.
Luis earned a prestigious ASPAU American scholarship program designed for talented African students, which allowed him to pursue an engineering degree at Drexel Institute of Technology in Pennsylvania, USA. Luis was deeply involved in student activities, proudly showcasing African attire, food, and culture.
After graduating, Luis furthered his studies at the California Institute of Technology where he obtained a Master's degree. His academic excellence led to immediate employment with the United States Government at the New York Ports Authority. Despite his success in America, Luis always felt a strong desire to return to Nigeria and contribute to his home country.
This aspiration led him to a position with Michelin France. He was initially sent to a language school, where he graduated ahead of his peers, mastering French to the extent that he became the key liaison between French executives and their operations in Nigeria. Luis was also fluent in Spanish.
In 1997, he returned to the United States, where he lived, worked, and eventually retired. On August 24th, 2024, just one day before his 82nd birthday, he passed away.
Throughout his life, Luis was a devout Catholic, a faith he embraced even more fully upon his return to the United States. He chose a life of simplicity, rejecting the pomp and luxuries of life in favor of a monastic existence. His days were filled with prayer, self-denial, and using his resources to support charitable causes.
