Lucy Mayes Gray was born September 16, 1933 in Midway, Texas to the late Minnie Ola Russell Mayes and Frank Mayes. Lulu as she was affectionately known by family and friends spent her early school years in Midway. After the family relocated to Houston, she completed her high school education at the old Booker T. Washington High School. Her walk with God began at a young age at the Antioch Church of Christ. In Houston she worshipped with the Third Ward Church of Christ, Kashmere Garden Church of Christ, and her final church home at the Trinity Gardens Church of Christ beginning under the late Bro. M.C. Daniels, Sr. At the time of her departure, Mama Lulu's minister was her son-in-law, Brother Timothy Daniels. Mama Lulu retired in 1983 after working many years for the C. J. White family. That family still keeps in touch to this day with the well-being of Lulu and Aunt Samantha. Sitting at home was not an option for her. She helped to support her family by driving taxi occasionally or working with her sister delivering phone books. She took several Business classes at HCC but because of family responsibilities, she put that on hold. She was an excellent seamstress and sewed for anyone who asked. She did your taxes and repaired your home if needed. She mentored and became mom to many in her immediate family as well as children in the church and community. She took care of the sick even when she was not feeling well herself. She was a woman of many talents which she graciously passed on to others. Lucy was married to Oscar Lee Gray who preceded her in death (1976).Together they raised six children: Roger Mayes (Yolonda), Beverly Gambrell (Clyde), Cynthia Daniels (Timothy), Rozella Lewis (Freddie), and Calvin Gray, all of Houston, and Charles Gray (Nicole) of Pflugerville, Texas. She leaves to cherish her memory, two sisters: Samantha E. Darby (the late George H. Darby) and Mary Mayfield (Paul), two brothers Robert E. Mayes (Delinda) and Eugene Mayes (Al). She was preceded in death by her mother and father and one brother, Robert Q. Mayes . She also leaves eighteen grandchildren, sixteen great-grandchildren, one great-great grandchild, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors, and friends.
