He served in the Army during the Korean War as a field artillery and field communications instructor. Leo was a part of the first group of lay people who served as Eucharistic Ministers in the Catholic church and in later years became involved in bringing the Eucharist to the sick and home bound. He served as Deputy Grand Knight in Knights of Columbus Council 12474, President of Golden Youth Club at St. Ambrose, and was a member of the St. Ambrose Men’s Club. He always volunteered to work fish fries, spaghetti dinners, and church bazaar among other events.
Leo was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather and loved to share his wisdom with his children and grandchildren. Great conversations and a lot of laughs were shared by all who knew Leo. Wanting to live life to its fullest, Leo loved to travel and explore new cities and states with his family. After the death of his wife, Hope in 2003, Leo participated in the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer walks to raise funds and awareness.
Preceded in death are his parents Edward J. Russek and Emelie Russek, sisters Adela Russek, Genevieve Trahan, Marie Gore, Ethel Miller, brothers Joseph Russek, Louis Russek, Frederick Russek, and Leo’s wife Hope Russek. Survived by his brother E.J. Russek, his children Eric Russek and Rachele Russek, and his grandchildren Madalyn Russek, Joshua Russek, and Hannah Russek.
Leo’s visitation will be on Wednesday, July 11, 2018 from 5:00 to 8:00 pm with a Rosary Service at 7:00 pm. Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, July, 12, 2018 at 10:30 am at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church, 3600 Brinkman St. Houston, Texas 77018. Burial will follow at Forest Park Westheimer Cemetery, 12800 Westhemier Rd. Houston, Texas.
