Larry graduated with a B.S. degree in Business Education from Eastern Illinois University in 1959. There he was a member of the Sigma Pi Fraternity. He began his career in 1959 as an auditor for the Illinois Agriculture Auditing Association. Larry went on to work for Marathon Oil Company from 1960-1994 in accounting and management, interrupted only by a two year service in the U.S. Army. Marathon took him and his family from Findlay, Ohio to Los Angeles, California, Casper, Wyoming, Anchorage, Alaska, and finally his favorite- Houston, Texas.
Larry was a dedicated sports fan. He enjoyed sports all throughout his life- from his early years of being on basketball, bowling, and golf teams to watching his favorite teams play on TV as often as possible. Larry filled his retirement years by never missing his granddaughters’ many events and activities. Their “Papaw” was always there for love, support, and encouragement. He was the ultimate handyman for his children- a paintbrush in one hand and a hammer in the other. He especially enjoyed spending time with his Corgi granddogs, Scout and Lucy, tending to their needs.
Larry is survived by his wife of almost 57 years, Marcie; Son, Steven Freeman of Katy, Texas; Daughter, Lori Wilson of Houston, husband Steve; Grandchildren, Katie and Kelly Wilson. His warm personality will be missed by his family as well as all his friends. He was a caring and gentle man.
A remembrance will be held on Sunday, August 23, 2015, from 2-4 at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home. A family memorial service will be held in Illinois at a later date.
In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations be made to an animal shelter of your choice to honor his many granddogs: Scout, Lucy, Meg, Clover, and Shuggums.
Larry’s family is grateful to his many doctors, the staffs of MD Anderson and Houston Methodist West Hospital, as well as his first-responders. His family appreciates the compassion and kindness shown while under their care.
