Joseph Carlton Thomas

On May 27, 2019, after a selfless act of bravery, Joseph Carlton Thomas was swept into heaven to meet his savior Jesus Christ.

Joseph was born January 31, 2003 in Honolulu, Hawaii to James A. Thomas Jr. and Christa Black Thomas.

Joseph attended Burchett Elementary School, Roberson Middle School and Spring High School (class of 2021) where he was known as “The Boy with the Guitar”. He was a Renaissance kid who was an active member of the school choir and the Lions Players Theatre Company.

Joseph had a passion for music that was ignited in the sixth grade. He received his introduction to guitar, percussion and piano while at Roberson. Joseph’s excellent dexterity and near perfect pitch transformed him into a gifted and predominantly self-taught musician in many respects. He played the six, seven and eight string guitars, ukulele, bass guitar, violin, marimba, conga, keyboards and drums. He was also a poet and song writer. In his spare time he played open mic gigs at the Blue Giraffe/Trilogy Brew Coffee Shop. He was a regular at Guitar Center, where he enjoyed spending time meeting new friends, sharpening his skills and introducing others to his passion.

Joseph enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He would often have several friends over “jamming” in his home studio. He was always thoughtful and concerned about his family and friends. He realized he was blessed differently than some of his peers and often shared access to his equipment with them. He made each family member feel special. He wrote a special song for his sister, Jamie, on her 18th birthday this year. His grandmother (Gram) called him her “Baby Grand”.

Joseph was a deep thinker. He enjoyed quiet and the solitude. He knew what he wanted out of life. He was very curious about how the human mind works. His interest in psychology was only second to his music. He was sometimes introverted, spending a lot of time in his own head. He was observant, taking in everything around him to fully consider a situation. He was humorous, very clever and witty with a sometimes quirky sense of humor. He would forget things sometimes because he was always thinking. Joe really cherished his relationships with his peers and teachers. We never saw him more excited than after a performance at Spring High School.

Joseph is preceded in death by his paternal grandmother, Josephine Thomas and his maternal grandfather, Green W. Black Jr.

Joseph’s memory will be forever cherished by his parents, James and Christa (Black) Thomas, three siblings: Erika (Jason) Lowe of London, England, James A. Thomas III of Greensboro, North Carolina, Jamie C. Thomas of Spring, TX; maternal grandmother, Mary A. Black of Pensacola, FL; paternal grandfather, James A Thomas Sr. of Houston, Texas; two uncles, Joseph Thomas and David Guillen of Round Rock, TX; two aunts (Tee Tees) Pamela Black Maye of Pensacola, FL; Beryl Black of Houston, TX; one niece Ava Lowe; one nephew, Tyler Lowe both of London, England; two cousins, Jared Henderson and Julian Maye of Pensacola, FL; and a host of other relatives and very special friends in and around Spring,TX
