A hardworking man, good father, proud grandpa, and loving husband passed away on December 7, 2020 after losing a two month-long fight with COVID-19 and pneumonia. José Ramón Reyes went back into the arms of his loving wife, Irene Varela, whom he lost 4 years ago. José Ramón was born in La Joya, Durango on August 31, 1953 to parents Hilaria Flores and José Guadalupe Reyes.
José Ramón is remembered by his family as a genuine, humble and driven man, who worked hard to provide a good life for his family. Growing up in Mexico, he did not have an opportunity to attend secondary school. As the eldest of his nine siblings, he had to start working at an early age to help his family. In 1968, at the age of 15, he immigrated to Texas to find work to provide for those back home. His work ethic and aptitude would see him rise from a humble dishwasher/busboy, to waiter, and eventually open his own restaurant in 1993, where he continued working with his sons until his last days. Along the way, he was loving husband to his wife Irene, and a strong role model to his five children. He loved to go out to eat mariscos, spend time in La Joya, listen to ranchera/mariachi music, and cheer for the Astros, win or lose, with his family. Later in life, he was able to work less and enjoy watching his grandchildren grow up.
José Ramón was preceded in death by his parents and wife. He is survived by his five children, Ramón Guadalupe Reyes and wife Sonia, José Guadalupe Reyes and wife Tracey, Juan Javier Reyes and wife Iris, Laura Reyes and husband Francisco Garcia, and Ricardo Reyes and wife Zia; ten grandchildren, Julian Reyes, Samuel Reyes, Lucas Reyes, Ariana Reyes, Blanca Reyes, Lexi Reyes, Joslyn Reyes, Catalina Garcia, Lorenzo Garcia, and Camila Reyes; eight siblings, Engracia Reyes, Maria Elena Reyes, Manuel Reyes, Jose Natividad Reyes †, Marcelo Reyes, Miguel Angel Reyes, Esperanza Reyes, & Felipe Reyes, and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends and family for visitation on Sunday, December 13, 2020 from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Brookside Funeral Home, 13747 Eastex Freeway, Houston, Texas 77039, and a funeral service on December 14, 2020 at 11AM at St Leo Catholic Church followed by a burial at Brookside Memorial at 12:30PM
