Though I have many memories of being in class with Jonathan there were much more enjoyable, pleasant, friendly memories of being his friend in the outside world.  I am sorry for your family’s loss.  May he Rest In Peace.

Dear Susan and Bob,

 It's been 2 months since Jonathan passed away. Between then and now, we still talk about the courage and strength he had shown everyone. We will never forget him playing the drum set at our house about this time of the year. 

He was lucky to have you. Your care and understanding throughout his illness were brave, wonderful things. We hope you can take comfort in this and in all the years you spent together.

 I finally had a Jonathan dream on Monday night! We were sitting in his kitchen at his house in heaven. It was yellow, and I wasn't dead I was just visiting him. He was eating peach rings and offered me some. I took some and started eating them and said "I thought you didn't need to eat in heaven" and he replied "you don't, but I just like to eat them anyways." And that was it. My heart aches so much. Everyday, you are a part of my wakefulness from the time I get up until I go to sleep. I visit your resting place 1-2x a week and that gives me comfort. I give you my imaginary hugs and just talk to you like you are really listening to me. I was watching the Black Eyed Peas perform on Oprah yesterday the "Little Drummer Boy" and I got so emotional and cried, just missing you too much. I look forward to your visits in my dreams and feel good to hear the other dreams from your friends and Kristina. Miss you too much my "baby" while tears pour down while I'm typing away.

Sooo, a random memory popped into my head last night. Remember when you and I went to Kroger and we ate an entire box of donuts while we shopped? Then when we got to the register and handed the cashier and empty donut box he was like "uhh don't worry about it" and he threw it away. I'm sorry I wasn't able to stay for the concert but I let them know I had presentations in class at the same time.  It was so nice, the band performed Maple Leaf Rag while a silent video of Jon playing on the keyboard at our house this past summer was projected on a big screen. That is what was so emotional, I just wasn't expecting to see that. It seems like it was just yesterday that he was in our house playing.

Project Jazz program 2010.... So after 2 songs played, Dr. John Wolfskill talked briefly about Jonathan, and told the audience that tonight's program is in his honor. He then looked for us in the audience, made eye contact and a wave and felt connected with Jonathan thru him. It was a very touching tribute. They played Maple Leaf Rag, the last piece Jonathan played with them last year while his picture was up on the screen playing his keyboard. His spirit was all over us. After the program, John came and visited with Bob and myself some more. Then we joined the rest of Jonathan's friends- Mike/Jaci, Matthew/ Brittney, Christy/Brian Payne, Maria/Louis,Brian B., Juan, Mauricio, Nora came to talk/hug briefly before the program, Brittany, Karla, Allison, and many more (I can't recall their names). With many hugs and smiles and warm feelings, it was such a wonderful tribute to a wonderful son, friend, student.

I was sitting at Jonathans desk like I normally do everyday, but except today, unlike any other day, the little black drawer at the bottom just opened on its own. There I was sitting, fidgeting on my phone and it slowly pulls open as if someones looking for something inside. Now, normally, things like this would scare me and I would automatically run away, but it didn't. I felt a feeling of relief wash over me and I turned quickly to see if I could catch him. I tested the drawer myself and started to kick it to see if itd open on its own, but it wouldn't. I know he was passing by.....

I miss you jon. I'm going to leave you some beautiful flowers before I come to work tomorrow :)

We (Leon and I) were in the Radke's lives from 1985 until 1988. Leon and Jonathan were the same ages and the best of buddies. I would arrive to watch the kids for 12 hours a day, 4 days a week. A couple of times I would wake the whole family because Bob and Susan were up late baking pies and slept through the alarms. As soon as I entered the house I would put Leon in the bed with Jonathan and they would wake up together.  Jonathan always thought that was great!  From the start Jonathan was so unique!  Leon, Jonathan and Christina would play for hours on end we would go on trips to parades, parks, libraries.  It was in the library that the kids experienced using a computer for the 1st time.  They were naturals. 
Jonathan would do things that you just couldn't believe..  Ex: I remember that once he spilled 3  puzzles on the floor and the hundreds of pieces mixed together.  Jonathan spent hours putting each puzzle together.  Amazing, you must remember he was a little guy but brilliant even then.  He would put his sandwich into the VCR why I couldn''t tell you but that was Jon. He would do little gags for Leon and Christina's enjoyment and they did enjoy his silliness.
 I can remember when Michael Jackson's Thriller came out. The three of them would watch that over and over. I still can't hear Thriller with out thinking of Jonathan, Christina and Leon sitting in the living room on Onadaga.St, in Kalamazoo, Mi.

Funny that mom saw Jon in her dreams b/c I did too on Saturday night! It was a really wild and wacky dream, involving magical lettuce that could end world hunger. But the best part was getting to grab Jonathan in a bear hug and tell him how much I loved him. It was to get him to stop eating all the magical lettuce, but still. :)

Went to Howl at the Moon last night...just that itself was a reminder of you. Then one of the pianists busts out Mario's invincible music for like 10 seconds and I wished it was you up there. I told him, "let me feel you" and extended my arm and he linked his arm with mine then poof- I woke up. I wanted to go back to sleep and see him some more and give him a hug but alas, didn't happen. Nevertheless, I woke really happy to see and hold my precious son albeit in my dream.

I am so sorry to know your son's death. Even our faith does not replace his early presence to you. I know in time his spirit will bring you comfort and hope but the sorrow remains in our human hearts.

I am glad I got to see him at Michele's retirement party. He was a fine man and you were so proud of him. I could tell he loved you immensely and he knew your love was unconditional and will last for all eternity.

Dear Jonathan, you were very much a part of our family and we miss you so very much, your kindness, your sense of humor and the special way you rang our doorbell. I know you're playing all your instruments up in heaven.

A famous writer once said “We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give”.
If that is true, then Jonathan Radke made a great life.  He was one of the most giving people I’ve ever met. And judging from the nodding heads I see in front of me, it seems that many of you agree.
I was so humbled when Bob and Susan asked me to speak in front of you all today. I was fortunate to know Jonathan the longest out of all his friends. However, while we both considered each other as best friends, I know he was a best friend to so many other people in this room. 
The past week, everyone has been asking me exactly how Jonathan and I first met. Had it not been for a little luck, we might not have ever been such close friends. I moved to Charlestown colony in the summer of 1991. I was the new kid and had no friends. On the first day of 3rd grade, we were all assigned a homeroom teacher. Had we not had the same homeroom, we might never have met. Our teacher sat the students in the classroom in alphabetical order.  I sat next to Jonathan as his last name was R for Radke, and mine S for Salinas. Again, had these small details and certain events gone differently that day, I might not be standing here before you all today. 
We both remembered vividly our first encounter with one another. I thought Jonathan was freakishly small, he thought I was freakishly big. I remember he had a buzz haircut, as he had that haircut for many years. After talking with each other, we found out many things. We both found out we rode the same school bus, bus number 418. Although Jonathan lived and Georgetown Colony, and I in Charlestown, we found out we lived 30 seconds from each other. We both religiously watched the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and both love playing Nintendo. From that day on, we were inseparable friends. 
Living now in the cell phone age, I openly admit that I cannot remember anyone’s phone number anymore. I’ve become too dependent on my cell phone and contact list. However, I will never forget Jonathan’s home number 281-859-1782 as I dialed in so many times in my life. 
I believe Jonathan’s biggest influence on my life was Music. I remember Jonathan always playing the piano from the time we met. I remember at times, Jonathan was not allowed to play outside with me, until he finished practicing his piano. I would then sit on his couch and listen while he practiced his piano music. I always wished I could play the piano as well as him, and still do today.  It is because of Jonathan and his sister Kristina, I joined band in 6th grade deciding to play the saxophone. Had it not been for the Radkes, I would not be the Professor of Saxophone at Morehead State University, in Morehead, KY.
Jonathan was a remarkably talented, caring, and fun-loving person. He was a person of great humor and adventure. 
Above all, Jonathan believed in being himself. Jonathan’s attitude reminds me of I quote I recently found from Dr. Seuss… 
"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." 
— Dr. Seuss
Those are words of wisdom that I will always cherish.
In closing, I would like to share this poem with you:

I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.

Thank you all for being here. I’m Jonathan’s sister, Kristina. 
Growing up with Jonathan was a lot like having a variety show on-hand all the time. When we were kids, our parents never let us eat in front of the television. We had sit-down meals every night and Jonathan was our entertainment. He sat at the head of the table and would tell us stories all throughout dinner… His enthusiasm and laughter were contagious. 
For those of you who don’t already know: our dad is quite the funny-man himself. Dad always tried to find ways to make us laugh and one night at dinner, as Jonathan was drinking his milk, Dad said something with such perfect timing that milk squirted out of Jon’s nose. Trying to get milk to come out of Jon’s nose became a regular part of our dinners and it took months for Jonathan to figure out how to avoid having it happen. 
Instead of trying to swallow the milk while laughing, he would just open his mouth and laugh out loud, letting the milk dribble down his chin and into his lap—which was just as funny, if not funnier than seeing it squirt out of his nose.
Beyond entertaining us with his humor, slapstick or otherwise, Jonathan was an amazing musician. Our mom loved to request performances and Jon was always happy to oblige. Jonathan and I started taking piano lessons at the same time, but it didn’t take long for everyone to recognize that he was the true musician in our family. I used to hide my sheet music because if I left it on the piano Jonathan would sit down and teach it to himself in a couple of hours. I remember practicing Beethovan’s Moonlight Sonata for weeks and one night I forgot to put the music away. Sure enough, the next morning I woke up to Jonathan playing the music perfectly. 
Even he could tell that my passion for music was nowhere near his own. When I was a freshman in college I got a phone call from Jonathan, which was rare. I think he was feeling a little guilty. He said, “You weren’t really planning to play that flute again were you?” 
And I said, “I don’t know, probably not. Why? Do you want it?” 
His response was, “Well, I sort of already took it to the pawn shop and sold it.” 
He ended up buying a new cymbal for his drum set with the money… I’m sure that the cymbal got much better use than the flute ever would have.
Jonathan’s passion for life was so evident in everything he did and, even though his time with us was brief, he lived his life to the fullest and touched a lot of lives along the way—your presence here today is testament to that. I know that wherever Jon’s journey takes him next, laughter and love will follow.

For those of you who do not know me, my name is Matt. I'm not going to stand up here and talk about my memories with Jonathan because I would be up here for years. I was the new kid in town and was looking for some friends. I found Jonathan and Johnny playing kickball in the street and asked if I could play. Of course, the answer was yes! That sparked a 20 year friendship that nothing could compare too. He was my best friend, he was my little brother. I always knew this day would come and that I would not be able to handle it. I told Jonathan that I did not know what I would do if I ever lost him. But now I've come to realize that I have learned so much through this. Bob, you told us that we were a blessing to Jonathan. I tell you now that he truly was a blessing to all of us! Just turn around and look at all of the people. They are all here for him. He has touched each and every one in his own little way. Jonathan had a huge heart. You may have lost your son today, but through him you have gained many more. Through all of the pain void of answers, turn to God and give it to him. Seek Him, and you will find peace. There is a bible verse that got me through many hard times, especially in the Marine Corps. Isaiah 40:31 reads "Those who wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not be faint." I love you guys and I promise I will always be here for you.

Hey man, you don't know how many times I keep seeing that little clown car of yours driving around! I think of you every time I see it and wish you were still here. Your mom asked for the eulogy I wrote to you. I can't stop thinking of you right now. Mike, Jaci, Brittney and I have all been hanging out a lot more since all of this. I only wish that it didn't have to be without you. But thank you too! I miss having my friends in my life and am so thankful for all of them. My only regret is that I did not have more of my time to share with you like we used too. I miss you so much!!! I'll see you again one day. Say hello to Jesus for me. Love you

We had the help of Jonathan's other family, the family of friends that took it upon themselves to help make Jon's going away party one in which even he would be proud. My son had the most loving, caring, and thoughtful group of "brothers and sisters" surrounding him that any man can imagine. Their strength and maturity was of great comfort to us during this tremendous loss. The collages, slide shows and videos were ideas that were created by his group of extremely noble and talented stewards. They exhibited their honest consideration for him all through his life and were then there for us even as they were struck with the shock and grief of losing a loved one. I am humbled by their dedication to Jon and words can not describe the gratitude that I have for them for being there for us at this time. We have adopted all of them as our "sons and daughters" and feel blessed that Jonathan had such an awesome and amazing band of siblings.

I wish I had some magic words to ease your pain. Jonathan's passing has hit us all very hard.  We're a family, and someone very precious has been taken from us. No parent should ever have to bury their child, and my heart just aches for ya'll. 
 
You raised a very fine young man, and he is very well thought of by everyone.   I looked at all the pictures, and Jonathan was always smiling---that great big beautiful smile----impish.  I thought alot of Jonathan.
 
I wanted you to know that I'm going to try to make either the viewing or the service, but I don't have a car right now and it's all I can do just to get to work.  I don't want to put anyone to any trouble so if you don't see me please know that I wanted to come---it's just up in the air right now.  
 
If there's anything I can do----if you'd like me to fix a particular dish just name it and I'll see that it gets to you or if you just need to talk call me at anytime day or night.  You're not alone, and somewhere down the road the pain will become at least bearable, but right now it's just minute to minute.

I apologize for responding so late.  I have been busy this week, and I had not read the emails.  Last night, someone from outpatient OR told me over the phone and I could not believe it.  
 
I have only been working at Mem City for 1 ½ years.  Jonathan was one of the first persons I connected with.  I often come in and out of the Westside entrance, so I saw him frequently.  He is a sweet, good soul.  With some people, you can just see it and just know.  With Jonathan it was evident.  He was always smiling, warm, and friendly.  I would put my arm around him and pat his back.  He was the kind of person who you want to be around.  He drew people in.
 
He was such a great employee and example for others.  He smiled and was upbeat when meeting the customers.  He was different; he was promising.  He shined. 
 
When I first met him he talked about how his mom was a director here, and I could tell he was proud of your accomplishments and proud to work at your place of business…a home away from home.
 
I feel especially hurt because we not only lost one of our best employees, but we lost a good friend.  You do not come by people like Jonathan often.
 
I want you to know you did a great job with him, your son.  He was a gentle, good man.  He made a big impact in my life and others.  
 
I will miss him every day that I walk in the West side entrance.

I was so shocked and saddened to hear that Jonathan died.  My prayers are with you and him. 
He always was so upbeat and peppy, and such a sharp dresser!!  He spoke to me every time we passed in the halls.  And he checked Frank in when he had an EGD in June. It's just so hard to believe!

 Jonathan was loved by so many people!  I know you know I loved him, too, and I will miss his funny, sweet smile and his colorful shirts and bowties.  But, most of all, I will miss seeing him helping people, with a smile, as he did so well, here at Memorial City.  I also know that he is in heaven now, face to face with our Savior, completely healed and praising God in those colorful shirts and bowties.
 
He was very special and gifted, Susan, and you should be very proud of the kind of young man he turned out to be.  It is obvious that you raised him with values and moral ethics and taught him kindness.  He was sweet and kind and smart and talented.  He will be missed.
 
P.S.  I wish my blood type had been the right one – I would have given him my kidney in a heartbeat!

Jonathan never failed to say goodnight when he left for the day. Rico and I will miss that so terribly. If it is any consolation at all, Jonathan was well loved. You had done wonderfully raising him. Edith tells me that you are reading your emails and I wanted to let you know that you are in my thoughts and prayers. I cannot imagine how difficult it can be to lose a child. I do know that only with God’s help can you get through this. My prayer is that you feel His presence at your side moment by moment and that you feel the strength He can give you. It isn’t supposed to happen this way. Parents are not supposed to lose their children to death before them. But the reality is that sometimes we don’t understand God’s plan. And His timing is not our timing. 
What a wonderful blessing Jonathan was to the people whose lives he touched. He was truly the “hands and feet” of God to those of us who were privileged to know him. His memory will live on in our hearts and time will not diminish it. We will smile at the thought of him and the ways he related to each of us. 
I trust and pray that your memories will be fond and that your tears will sweet as you remember Jonathan’s life. Hold fast to those memories and cherish them in your heart. Death always seems so final and difficult to sort through the emotions. But remember that death is a part of life and it is NOT final. It comes to each of us in God’s time, though we do not know the hour or the minute. I know that there were not any “loose ends” in your lives with Jonathan; that your relationship was current and strong and there were no things left unsaid. It is a reminder to each of us to keep our relationships current and close because we don’t want to have “things left unsaid” when that time comes to us.
 Thank you for allowing me to know and love Jonathan. I pray that you will feel God’s presence and His love surrounding you as you walk through this period of sadness and grief. Remember God promises us to go with us to comfort us and hold us up as we go through rough waters. He goes with you and your family now. Lean on Him and let Him give you strength and comfort.
