John Arthur Hruska

John Arthur Hruska, 87, died peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2023 after a courageous battle with Alzheimer’s Disease. His funeral will be held on Monday, October 9th at St. Peter’s United Methodist Church on Kingsland Boulevard at 10:00 am with his burial to follow at 12:00 pm at Memorial Oaks Funeral Home and Cemetery on Katy Freeway.

John was born on March 18, 1936 in Temple, Texas to Viola Knauth and Rudolph Joe Hruska. He spent most of his childhood in Austin and played on the football team at Austin High School. John’s college of choice was an obvious one, as he traveled a short distance down the road and earned his bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas. He was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity and a passionate fan of his beloved Longhorns. John went on to graduate from the College of Pharmacy at the University of Houston in 1963 and immediately began a successful career as a pharmacist. He owned his own pharmacy in Westbury for many years and earned a reputation as a professional and caring man who would take the time to get know his customers and was known to make personal deliveries to those who were confined to their home.

In the early 1960’s, John had the good fortune of meeting the love of his life and his wife of 60 years, Ruth Kosclskey. He picked her up for their first date in his red Triumph 3 convertible, and the rest is history. John and Ruth built a beautiful life together. They both had professions that brought them personal satisfaction, they enjoyed their home life, and they adored their only child, their dog Reb. He brought John and Ruth so much joy and, in return, they gave Reb the best life.

Upon marrying Ruth, John instantly inherited five new siblings: Carmen, Pauli, Louis, Ann and Nancy. He went on to have thirteen nieces and nephews who quite simply thought that he was the best uncle one could ever have. He was their cheerleader, financial benefactor, employer, boat driver, ski instructor, bed and breakfast, Santa, and the best example of what a father should be.

Later in life John and Ruth found joy in traveling around Texas on birding excursions and being active members in their community, Heritage Grand at Cinco Ranch. John was very active in volunteering to help with activities and he and Ruth took daily walks around the neighborhood, and they made a lot of meaningful friendships while living there.

John’s health continued in a steady decline over the past few years, and he tried to hang on as long as possible to be there for Ruth and to take care of her as best he could. Those of you who knew and loved John, know that he is in a better place. While you will be terribly missed, your amazing laugh, mischievous smile and generous spirit will live on through those whose lives you touched. And there were many. Job well done, John, now get the rest you so richly deserve.
