John passed away on December 23, 2021, his birthday. He was born in Glendale, California but spent most of his life in Galveston. He graduated from Ball High School and then went on to graduate from Texas A&M University in 1958 with a degree in architecture. He was a member of the American Institute of Architects and the Texas Society of Architects. John opened his architecture office in 1967 and retired after fifty years of practice. He was an active real estate investor in shopping centers, apartments and warehouses, and remodeled his home, ranch, and office. John loved the water and was a sailor for 32 years until he gave in and became a power boater. He and his wife enjoyed many trips along the gulf coast and Florida. They also enjoyed travel and took many interesting trips abroad. John was a member of St. Martin’s Church, Lakewood Yacht Club, and the Briar Club.
John is survived by his wife of 63 years, Johnnie Mae Lemke Houchins, and two sons, John F. Houchins IV and Jay Taylor Houchins. A private service will be held for the family, and a celebration of life is postponed until after COVID. We are grateful to everyone for their friendship and prayers.
