John retired from a 20-year career in the Army and had a second career as a law enforcement officer for the Houston Airport Police as well as an Investigator for the Harris County District Attorney’s office.
He attended the Fondren Seventh Day Adventist Church, and was a member of the Blue Ridge Lion’s Club, and the Booker T. Washington High School Alumni Association.
John Gray was a Jazz and Rhythm & Blues aficionado, passionate Houston Astros, Rockets and Comets (Seasons ticket holder) fan. He played high school baseball and football (all city) and varsity football in college at Southern University and Texas Southern.

Grandchildren: Lance Rodriguez (Laura), Camille Rodriguez, Anna Garza Carson (Tyler), Aaron Rodriguez (Bethina), Carissa Gray
Great grandchildren: Desire Rodriguez, Xavier Rodriguez, Alexa Rodriguez, Jayden Rodriguez, Sofia Rodriguez Carson, Benjamin Rodriguez Carson
Sister: Wyona Fitzgerald, Billie Rose Gray (deceased)
A visitation for John will be held Sunday, January 8, 2023 from 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Fondren Seventh Day Adventist Church, 7950 W Fuqua Drive, Missouri City, TX 77489. A funeral service will occur Sunday, January 8, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:00 PM, 7950 W Fuqua Drive, Missouri City, TX 77489. A committal service will occur Monday, January 9, 2023 from 11:30 AM to 12:00 PM at Houston National Cemetery, 10410 Veterans Memorial Drive, Houston, TX 77038.
