Joann Weygandt

Joann was born in Houston on May 11, 1931, and was the only child of William Edward Kelley and Effie Josephine (Heath) Kelley. She grew up in the Heights and graduated from Reagan High School. Joann earned a Bachelor of Arts from Sam Houston State University in 1952 and a Master of English from University of Houston in 1956. At “Sam,” she met her future husband, Quay Edison Weygandt. They eloped on July 10, 1952, and were married for 66 years until Quay’s death in 2019.

Joann began her teaching career in Port Arthur in 1952, but resigned mid-term to move back to Huntsville to be with Quay until he graduated college. She taught in the Houston area until the couple moved to Fort Worth where Quay attended Southwestern Theological Seminary. After the Weygandt family returned to Houston in December 1968, Joann taught at several elementary schools in the Houston Independent School District, and was awarded Southmayd Elementary School Teacher of the Year, 1979-1980. She retired from teaching in 1990 to devote herself to being a full-time grandmother, a job she loved dearly.

Joann was a faithful member of First Baptist Church Pasadena. She sang in the sanctuary choir, looked forward to being in the Singing Christmas Tree each year, and enjoyed participating in the handbell choir, the Joy Singers, and the Keen Age Klub.

Joann was a loving daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Joann is survived her daughter, Kelley Pauline (Robert) Laird; son, Kyle Edison Weygandt; grandchildren Garrett Wayne (Kassidy) Laird, Brandon Andrew Laird, and Kristi Nicole (Michael) Calvo; and great grandchildren Tatum Grace Laird, Kolter Alan Laird, River Waylon Laird, Michael Cayden Calvo, and Chloe Mae Calvo. Joann is also survived by her sister-in-law, Vera Lou Weygandt; nieces Lynnette Palmer and Deborah Oliver; and nephews Jon Weygandt and James Weygandt.

A visitation for Joann will be held Friday, August 26, 2022 from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at First Baptist Church of Pasadena, 7500 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena, TX 77505. A funeral service will occur Friday, August 26, 2022 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at First Baptist Church - Pasadena, 7500 Fairmont Parkway, Pasadena, TX 77505. A burial will occur Friday, August 26, 2022 from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM at Forest Park Lawndale, 6900 Lawndale Street, Houston, TX 77023.
