He was born in Houston, Texas on October 11, 1938 to Earl and Maycil Sparks. Jerry graduated from Jeff Davis High School, class of ’57. He had a passion for baseball and football which resulted in several scholarship offers from universities such as Texas A&M, University of Houston, and SMU. He ultimately chose the University of Texas and later attended University of Houston as well. Jerry married his high school sweetheart, Beverly Ann Monroe Sparks, on October 5, 1957. Together they built a life filled with love and laughter, focused on family.
Jerry made his living working for Houston Lighting & Power. He worked his way up from helper to apprentice, then lineman and retired as a supervisor of substation operations after 38 years of service.
Jerry was a member of the Huffman ISD School Board for several terms in the late 80’s and early 90’s. He served in many capacities for the Huffman Little League through the years including President of the League and coaching many teams. Jerry spent countless hours with his wife and children serving his community through Little League baseball.
Jerry attended Lake Houston United Methodist Church where he served as a member of the Trustees committee and helped out however he could until he and his wife were no longer physically able to attend. Jerry and family also attended First Baptist Church of Huffman in the 80’s where he was also an active member. Jerry loved his Lord and wasn’t ashamed to let people know. During his illness, he told his surgeon, “Together we are going to make God look good,” and they did just that. Jerry’s positive attitude and kind spirit won the hearts of everyone he came in contact with.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Beverly Ann Sparks. Jerry adored his “Bevo” and wanted nothing more than to make sure she was well cared for. Jerry is also survived by his daughter Kimberly Edwards and son-in-law, Mark Edwards. One of Jerry’s biggest joys in life was his grandchildren. “Papaw” was always known to be loving on his grandkids, whether they were outside playing ball, learning how to fix something around the house, gardening or even cooking together. Jerry had five grandchildren: Johnathan Sparks, Megan Rollins, Matthew Edwards, Zachary Edwards, and Joshua Edwards. Jerry was also blessed with five great-grandchildren: Johnathan Sparks, Jr., Timothy Sparks, Bella Sparks, Layne LaBree and Cooper Edwards.
Jerry was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Maycil Sparks, his brother, Danny Sparks, and his sons, Ricky and Timmy Sparks. We are all comforted knowing he is rejoicing in heaven with family.
The family will hold a private graveside service at Brookside Funeral home on Saturday, January 4, 2020. There will be a memorial service the same afternoon at 3:00 p.m. for all to celebrate the life of Jerry Sparks at Lake Houston United Methodist Church, 23606 FM 2100 in Huffman.
